I don't get it. UCLA's roster is stacked with Fab 50 recruits. Bad coaching? Not a cohesive unit? Too much “me” and not enough “us”. they are 10-4... lost to #1 2x, ucsb 3-2 to a team that is hot without a key starter, the CSUN lost you can question but wait to see results from next 3 matches before you start picking them apart. They were in the NCAA finals last year, they must suck. Lots of teams would trade places with them in a heartbeat.

Also, keep in mind the Bruins lost four key seniors. With Long Beach, Irvine and Hawaii returning so many players did anyone expect the Bruins to roll through those teams? Of course not. The Bruins are a bit out of sync right now. But the program has hardly fallen off the map.

UCLA has 3 pin hitters that would not start on a lot of teams. 2017 class - Alex Parks, Ryan Norris and Colin Bailey. Who thought thee guys were impact players? Maleski yes, but they put him inside. 2016 Eschenberg? Maybe someday, Sam Kobrine? Really never, maybe a starter, but never an impact player. 2015 Missry, a starter, but not an impact player.

Keller had Schneidmiller in his Bay to Bay club, since age 12. UCLA couldn't sign him due to his GPA.

Interesting decision. Say no to a top program with a great coach at a top academic university because you don't like an assistant. Hopefully there were other reasons.

I think about this time last season there was a similar discussion about UCLA. But look where they ended up. I would not be surprised if UCLA finishes OK in the regular season, wins the MPSF and ends up in the final again.

This was painful to watch... But every Long Beach State match is painful to watch. They're just too damn good. Honestly, if Speraw wants to stay in the 5-1 then it has to be Maleski at OPP. I still think Parks has a higher ceiling and has a great connection with the pins but I'm not against letting Ma'a go it alone. Younggren is a very capable middle who can block, serve, and defend. He just needs to work on his attacking. It's pretty clear why Charlie Wade has made the decisions he's made in regards to his line-up over the past two years. Rattray has zero consistency and Matatuia can't pass. Seven? He got aced seven times in 3 sets. UCLA is better off letting Eschenberg or someone else get their reps until Missry gets back. I go back and forth, but that could be that maleski needs to be in just for the size factor. The other issue is UCLA recruiting. Brad Keller is supposed to be the center of UCLA recruiting. What pin hitters has he signed in the last 4 years? What pin hitters has he not signed? Why did UCLA need to sign 3 players this season from Upperclassmen?

Besides Jasper and Schneidmiller who should UCLA have signed? 2016 top ranked hitters 3 Kobrine 4 Matautia 5 Dyer. For 2017 only 1 Jasper 2 Schneidmiller. Seems the top teams have strong Sr. pin hitters and not many Sophomores and Juniors are impact players at this time.

Also the college game is full of guys who weren’t top recruits in high school. It doesn’t really mean anything if you’re outworked and out-trained by someone who was pretty good as a young player and developed into a beast. Also someone said it earlier but this senior class is insane as far as impact players go a lot of teams all around the country will have big shoes to fill next year just like UCLA did this year with losing Hatch, Arnitz, etc.
