The London 2012 Quarterfinal between Brazil and Russia is my favorite match ever. 5 highly contested sets, with the fifth going far into OT. Staving off something like 6 match points from Russia, Sheilla comes through with clutch kill after kill to keep her team alive. One of the greatest clutch performances ever. The match also features Russian greats Gamova and Sokolova at the end of their illustrious careers.

December 10, 2004, Set 4, Minnesota v. Georgia Tech in the NCAA Tournament at the Pav. Georgia Tech won the set 48-46( but Minnesota won the match 3 sets to 2 to advance eventually to the final 4 where they finished second to National Champion Stanford). It was the craziest set I ever witnessed. Both teams obviously ran out of subs and DS's were playing front row. Both teams had multiple set points. The home crowd was insane. The Pav was rockin'. I believe this is still the NCAA record for most point scored in any set. AMAZING!!!!!!

Either in 2007 or 2008, Nebraska was playing Texas at home during the regular season. I believe it would've been toward the beginning of either sets two or three. Nebraska digs a ball high to the 3m line, and Banwarth takes the second ball and dumps it to the Texas floor. I think she just stood there and put her hands up in disbelief. It was a big point.

Japan-China Olympic Quarterfinal Set 5 is pretty amazing. I also love watching Set 5 Stanford-Penn State from the regional finals in 2013 (especially Katie Slay taking over late in the set)

Set 5, Nebraska at Washington in the 2008 regional final. Huskers came back from being down 9-3 in set 5 to win.

Had to do some digging, but a funny little play.
2013 Grand Prix Final (USA vs China) 41:50 Ball hit by Zeng Chunlei got sandwiched perfectly between Kim Hill's arms, her reaction is priceless.

I like all the Cuban Women Olympic Gold wins, but it's hard to choose which one is their BEST, simply watching Mireya Luis making those gravity-defying jumps is amazing enough.
But as for other best matches, 1988 Olympics USSR vs Peru Indoor Women is definitely one. Legendary coach Karpol's second Olympic Gold. Peru had comfortably beaten the Soviets in the first two sets and was leading 12-6 in the 3rd set (for the kids here, this was back in the days of sideout scoring, when you only need 15 points to win a set, of course you can only score when your team is serving.), so Peru only needed 3 more points to win. But no, Karpol and his team staged an incredible comeback to win the match 3-2:
Speaking of the Russians, another one of my favorite "best" matches is the 2004 Olympics Russia vs Brazil semifinal match. Another sense-defying comeback by the Russians. The Brazils were leading 24-19 in set 3 after winning the first two sets. All the Brazilians needed was 1 more point, but the Russians somehow managed to pull back from their brink of defeat to win against the Brazilians 3-2:
And one more match, 1984 Olympics Gold, China vs US. Can't say it's my "favorite" because of the results, but it is still one of the best matches, if nothing else, seeing those classic players on court like the late great Flo Hyman, Paula Weishoff, Debbie Green, Linda Chisholm, Rita Crockett etc.

China vs Brazil 2016 Olympics The match that made me eat humble pie. The Brazilian broadcast of the match is online, I really wondered what the commentators were saying: It would be great if someone understands Portugese here.

Well, since it is 50/50 'tween NCAA and international: My fav was the match/ fifth set/ final 3 points for SU v. NE in recent NCAAs. S. Wilson KILLED IT on those serves; M. McClure won it!

I can think of 2 that I really like off the top of my head. One that I'm not going to include is the NCCA Final ('97?) -- Penn St. vs. Stanford -- that one was a treat to watch -- primarily set 4. Then, there's this match: Misty May's final NCAA match. The contrast of styles is great ... and I wonder if LBSU's offense is the one that Karch wants to run? I mean, if it was run like how this Long Beach State team ran it -- of course, it took those 4 seniors, 4 years to get to the point of running it that way. Also, I really liked the quarterfinal match (particularly set 5) -- USA vs. South Korea. Feel like this was the beginning of the makings of what we are reaping now (in terms of national team). At the last Olympics, many veterans retired (Teee Williams, 2 Oden sisters, etc)... so leading up to the 2000 quad, the US team was pretty much a leading up to the Olympics. Only within a year of the Olympics, did I think Ah Mow join ... then there were the relatively recent graduates Kerri Walsh and Heather Bown and the young Logan Tom. I feel like all were new to the international scene. I feel like this team was like "the little engine that could." They had a remarkable run, short of a medal, but as an unlikely team, did make it all the way to the semi-finals. The ending of this set is wonderful, as the substitutions were clutch -- especially with Kerri Walsh (who was coming off an ankle injury). This would be the future core of the next following Olympics (with Kerri eventually moving onto beach).

Gonna add one more match to this: 2001 NCAA NC between Stanford & LBSU. LB was ahead 29-27 in the 1st, SU scored 4 in a row. SU was ahead 29-23 in the 2nd, LBSU scored five straight, then Yamashida (sp?) hit a serve out-of-bounds (long). Stanford established late momentum and sweep in the 3rd. LB was undefeated coming into the match; they have not gotten back to any championship match, since. Logan Tom came back from the Olympics to play two more seasons: NOT turning pro (MOST unique)!
