Wolfgang's post on solos got me thinking about some covers that I had been made aware of. So, here are some and post the ones that caught your attention.
Liliac, Rainbow in the Dark.
Kinga Glyk, Tears in Heaven
Springsteen, Highway to Hell
Johnny Cash covering Springsteen. I wish the two could have been at their peaks at the same time.

I have a special fondness for Christmas song covers, although I don't call them "covers" even though they are technically "covers." I call them "versions." I love listening to all versions of every single Christmas song ever written. Well, mostly the non-religious Christmas songs. So, yes to "Sleigh Bells" but no to "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen."

One of few Beatles remakes that I like.
Here are a few more obscure covers that the artists really make their own.

I also like covers of bands that have such a distinctive sound that sometimes you forget the underlying music and lyrics were actually really good.

The list of great covers is short. At the top, there's really only one.
When the original band stops playing it because they can't top the remake and that they prefer the remake, that's saying something.

There is Hamilton mix that I really like, but this is my favorite. It’s heartbreaking and takes place after Hamilton’s son is killed in a duel. Sat next to a friend when I saw Hamilton whose son had taken his life. She just sobbed during this song 😢.

I was never a fan of the original "You Can't Hurry Love" by the Supremes (Diana Ross, lead). But I love Phil Collins's version:

I love it when covers transform the original -- and make it much much better. See, e.g., "Blue." I'm not a big fan of the song but the way Leann Rimes transformed that song and "made it her own" is incredible. Here's the original Bill Mack version:
Here's Leann Rimes's 1996 cover:

And here's one where I heard the cover before I ever knew the original If you are like most people, there are probably many songs you never knew were covers. Lots of rock bands have covered blues songs, for instance, and many times their fans are unaware of the originals. And sometimes the covers become so iconic for the band that it's hard to remember they were covers. But back in the heyday of some of these studios, sometimes writers would write the song for the studio and then the studio would decide which artists played it. Is that a "cover"? Maybe. Twist and Shout was written for Phil Specter, and then he gave it to a group called the Top Notes. Well the songwriter didn't like Specter's interpretation, so he produced a version with the Isley Brothers. A year later, the Beatles recorded their version.

I think my first experience of this was "Till There Was You," a song from the Broadway musical The Music Man. Here's the original from the film version of The Music Man, sung by Shirley Jones (begins at 1:14): Here's the Beatles' cover of the same song:
