Another example: who thinks of Elvis's Hound Dog as a cover?
Elvis actually did a LOT of covers. He was a southern white guy who hung around with the black musicians and loved their songs and their music and did many of his own versions of their songs. But because he was white, segregated radio stations played his versions and many of them became far better known than the originals. Sometimes people claim Elvis got famous by "stealing" the music of black artists, but I don't think many of those artists see it that way. Elvis played their music because he respected it and enjoyed it. It was the segregation of the time that was the reason why white radio stations only played his covers.

I suck at guitar, mostly because I hardly practiced. Plus, lack of talent. But when I see videos like the following, it inspires me to pick up the guitar and take lessons:
I've been filmed with a camcorder for home movies while playing the piano or singing karaoke and the #1 complaint I got from my wife and kids is: I NEVER SMILE TO THE CAMERA!!!!
They say I look like someone who took a laxative and is about to dump a load in seconds.

I love it when covers transform the original -- and make it much much better. See, e.g., "Blue." I'm not a big fan of the song but the way Leann Rimes transformed that song and "made it her own" is incredible. Here's the original Bill Mack version: Here's Leann Rimes's 1996 cover: Anything Leann Rimes covers turns to gold.

Madonna's performance in "Evita" were great covers. In a way, it was quite a departure from the style of pop songs she usually sung. I was skeptical that Madonna could do justice to this musical at first, but I was surprised she sung very well:
