I can't help but root for this team. Talk about an underdog, and they really embody resiliency and a positive attitude. They are trying! Really hope they can keep making consistent, small improvements to keep chipping away at the B1G. Still going to be a struggle for them, I'm afraid.

Well first maybe they should pay their coach a decent salary. He may only be making close to $100k by now, and is the lowest paid women’s volleyball head coach in the B1G. Geographically speaking, that salary doesn’t get you very far in terms of cost of living. Smh.

They're a young team. Only lose one player to graduation. I'm expecting a conference win or two!

A coach with that record at just about any power-5 or mid-major school would have been fired years ago. Regardless of the funding of the program. First thing they need to do is care about the program. Then they need to fully fund it. Then you can discuss the coach.

They lose their leading scorer from last year to graduation and as of now have no one new coming into the program this year and zero commits going out. Hard to have ANY optimism for improvement...

I wrote this feature on CJ Werneke last season. Great guy with a great story. Gotta admire the way he approaches things and keeps plugging away. I just removed the Premium tag from it so it's free: volleyballmag.com/rutgers-werneke-110718/

His teams get good grades, represent the school well. Wins will come if recruiting picks up. I think the now Sophomores will be greatly improved.
