I in no way pretend to have a better grasp of physics than you, but this answer is really beneath you. I just want to reiterate that arguing with Mike here is silly. Give it up. Trust him here. General relativity and quantum physics agree with him. Why won't you?

I see some discussion of application of force (F=M x A) and some discussion of collision and kinetic energy (Ek = ½mv2 ). If we are talking a perfect inelastic collision, kinetic energy is pertinent. Velocity dominates as it is the squared term. Where this gets a little tricky is with follow through. A hitter that follows through maintains longer contact and continues to apply force beyond that of the initial collision. In this case the F=M x A piece applies in addition to the initial kinetic energy. The rules are built to try to minimize throwing the ball by continuous application of force...instead the intent is to apply kinetic energy through hit. My 2 cents and yes, first post.

All the details of the contact between the hand and the volleyball determine the resonance of the ball after contact and is responsible for the heavy ball phenomenon along with trajectory changes of hybrid and floater serves. I know Mike never learned quantum physics but this should be simple newtonian considerations.

When Katherine Plummer spikes a volleyball there is a greater relativistic effect and that clearly explains the “heavy” ball phenomena.
