It is not for head and finger protection or anything to do with getting hit by the serve. It is to block the vsison of the passers on the opposing team. Guys play dirty and are much more involved in trying to mentally beat out their opponents than the women’s game is. I currently play club and just about every club team in boys does this ( and talks through the net). It’s VERY big thing in Cali boys volleyball
