An extra piece of info -- once a student-athlete places their name in the portal, their current school can begin to reduce or completely eliminate their scholarship funds. I believe that they can only do that at the end of the current academic term. Go into the portal in December, no aid in the Spring. Go into the portal in March, keep your aid in the Spring. This is correct.

What was posted on a Longhorns sports premium message board (football) about reducing/eliminating funds didn't specify timelines; definitely inferred it could happen instantaneously. Does seem that would be pretty rough and without warning, though.

Pretty sure the exact reading of the rule is that scholarship can be eliminated starting with the next semester. It cannot be done for the current semester. So the scenario described in the prior post is correct.

On the Twitter reply thread, someone asked McMurphy how he got that picture and his reply was like "the portal is not public, sorry!" I guess if someone commits a FERPA violation to give a journalist protected information, it is not illegal to publish it? I have seen more than one screenshot of some names in the portal. Than you have seen more than one instance of a violation

Well, the new part is that if an athlete puts their name into the portal in October, the school can cancel their aid for the spring semester. Athletic scholarships can only be reduced/non-renewed at the end of the academic year. The exception is if the athlete goes into the portal. Then it can be cancelled at the end of the current semester/quarter. (New meaning in the last year, since the portal is only 6 months old)

I view the portal as quitting the team.
