Iowa State loses a lot - will they really stay top half? I don't know how they replace Schaben and Lazard's production - they may be in bubble territory.
When Nebraska left, it seemed ISU would be the perennial #2 in conference but they've been declining quite a bit, though the Big XII's favorable RPI bias has dampened the visibility of this. From 2006-2012 Cyclones' Pablo final finish averaged at 14, finishing only once outside Top 20 and as high as #5. From 2013-2018 their year-end Pablo averages out to 30, never making the Top 20.
Baylor and TCU are recruiting at a much higher level and the bottom half of the Big XII is getting more competitive - it may get even tougher for them.

Texas Volleyball Named Big 12 Preseason FavoritesJune 27, 2019 For the 12th time in program history and the ninth consecutive year, the Texas Longhorns were voted the favorite in the Big 12 for the upcoming 2019 season. The preseason poll is determined by league head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their own team. Since 2011, Texas has lost a total of seven conference matches for a record of 121-7 (.945), which included two perfect records of 16-0 (2013 & 2017). Texas owned a 24-match win streak in conference play which was comprised of a perfect 16-0 record to cap off the 2017 season, as well as its seven wins to start out the 2018 season. In team hitting percentage, the Longhorns led the nation last season with a .310 clip. UT also had a presence in the preseason Big 12 individual awards as Micaya White garnered Preseason Player of the Year recognition for the second consecutive year, while rookie teammate Skylar Fields earned Preseason Freshman of the Year honors, alongside TCU’s Audrey Nalls. 2019 BIG 12 VOLLEYBALL PRESEASON POLL Rank Team (First-place Votes) Points 1. Texas (8) 64 2. Baylor (1) 57 3. TCU 42 4. Iowa State 40 5. Kansas State 34 6. Oklahoma 33 7. Kansas 31 8. Texas Tech 14 9. West Virginia 9 Concur, nice analysis. What is interesting to me is that the top-tier teams are consistently top-tier with Texas dominating this league year after year. The bottom-tier teams are consistent as well with WVU the celler-dweller year after year. There seems to be little to no parity in this league. What will it take to make it more competitive top to bottom in league? Better coaching, recruiting, or scheduling. I don't, and haven't seen the bottom of this group change for many years even though they carry overall winning records. It seems to me that in the Big10 and Pac12 the potential is there for any team to pull off an upset on any given night, but not in the Big12. Other than Kansas in 2015-16.

And Kansas got their 3rd MB commit for the 2020 class. This class has a lot of depth (the best since I have been following Kansas) and the potential for 3 senior aces and possibly a couple in the T50. It will be the 3rd straight season of having a very good recruiting class - 2018-2020 will be by far the best 3 year recruiting run in school history. Not sure what they are going to do with all these MBs? This 3 year run will have 6 MB, does Van Driel convert to OH? I've saw her hitting from the OH at a spring ball event!

Yes, but KU only had one OH this spring (Smith) - so someone else had to play there. Was this because someone had to play there and Van Driel was it, or are they serious about her permanently moving to the outside? Did the coaching staff see enough to believe that her future is on the outside and thus the latest MB commit? The pipeline certainly suggests the possibility of a permanent move - especially with Crawford coming in next year.

It seems to me that in the Big10 and Pac12 the potential is there for any team to pull off an upset on any given night, but not in the Big12. I think the gap is closing slowly. Firstly, Texas should be good at every sport just because of the fact that it’s an excellent school in a great city. Texas shouldn’t have any problems recruiting in any sport. But in volleyball, Baylor, TCU and Kansas are doing with they can to close that gap. They just don’t have that national respect Texas had. Baylor looks like they can be really good this year. TCU with McCall will continue to grow. Kansas has been the team that’s challenged Texas. What surprised me with Kansas is how they performed early last year. During the Payne years they challenged Texas. Last year without Payne, Havili, And Rigdon, Kansas started 6-0 in the big 12 with wins over Texas, Baylor, and TCU. And then the injury bug just derailed the whole season as they lost 5 straight games to end the season and still almost made the tournament.

I don’t know anything about the incoming recruits (I would like to know more about what they bring in in 2020). But the only OH hitter was Smith. Christon who was ranked pretty well, came a little late and Foltz is a late addition freshman. Van Driel gives them depth in the Middle and OH. Hickman (FR RS) will probably be one of the go to players. And with Langs/Hill in the middle getting swings. Smith will be a consistent OH1, the question is about OH2. Van Driel has that spot for now I think but maybe Christon will make noise. Kansas still has a lot to figure out with the setting situation and what system they will run. It’ll be interesting to see.

It’ll be interesting to see. 2020: Caroline Crawford 6-3 MB: She played with the National team last year and is among the 24 finalist this year - will most likely be a top 25 recruit if not the highest recruit in school history (Although Morgan Christon was ranked very high per PV). Has been playing up a year in club - this year playing on the 18-1 MAVs team. Karli Schmidt 6-1 OH: Karli is most likely going to be a top 100 recruit next year and possibly a T50. She has been playing mostly 6 rotation in club, but still has development in passing if she does this at the next level. Interestingly, Crawford just moved and I believe is going to play her senior year of HS at the same school as Schmidt (Lansing) Kim Whetstone 5-11 MB: Whetstone has a chance to make the T100 recruits for next year. She is a quick middle with huge leaps. has some similarities to Zoe Hill - although Whetstone is very skilled on the slide and I doubt she can jump like Hill (not sure there is anyone that can jump like Hill). Whetstone is part of the KC MAVs team that won Nationals last year (16U) and is among the top teams this year. That team includes 2021 KU commit Caroline Bien. Molly Schultz 5-7 DS: Schultz is a libero for Minnesota Select and from what I have seen, I think she is very good. I suspect she will get some HM listing with Prepvolleyball. Elise Mcghie 5-9 S: I don't know much about her - a KC recruit from one of the top 3 KC clubs. I suspect she will give them valuable depth at S as it is unclear who will be setting (backing up) come 2021/2022. Kaitie Parks 6-2 MB: Just verbally committed in the last couple weeks and plays on the same club team as Schmidt.

Do you think that's just how it worked out in 2020 or has Kansas changed their recruiting strategy?

Kansas’ roster right now is 5 players from Kansas, 5 players from Texas and 4 other from other states. I think that’s just the way it worked out. But there’s a lot of talent in the Missouri/Kansas area. Kansas’ recruiting has really picked up these few years. Also Laura Kuhn took the head coaching job at A&M and she recruited Texas heavily for Kansas. So I think with her gone, it’ll be a little harder for them to recruit Texas. Billy Ebel (assistant coach) is from Kansas and coached a UMKC which is why you may see a lot more Kansas and Missouri kids. There other assistant is Kaitlin Nielsen who is in her first year. She went to UCLA and coached there for 6 years and was their recruiting coordinator. Interestingly, Kansas hasn’t had a player on its roster from California since 2007

If Kansas had gotten 2 of the top 3 players from KC over the past 5 years, they could be a top 10 team this year - so the change in recruiting strategy makes sense. I would guess that they will continue to try and get players from Texas or anywhere - but will try and lock down KC as their base.

Any reason Shelly Fanning isn't on the Baylor Roster? I think she graduated, but I am assuming she is still playing her final year of eligibility?
