Who do you like? Alright here’s some general observations from today: Pressley has seriously gotten better. She looks stronger and is touching higher but the biggest thing I noticed is that she took much smarter shots. She didn’t have a great hitting percentage last season so if she keeps working on eliminating errors she’ll be so much better. The most improved player from last season is Hannah Lockin. She ran a 5-1 on the “A” team against Hannah Fluegel and Callie Williams who ran a 6-2 on the “B” team. Lockin was just connecting so much better with her hitters. She’s also become so much more physical and had quite a few kills with her left hand. I thought Williams may come in and get some good time but Lockin looked too good. Shelly (Fanning) Stafford is finally healthy! Remember last season she wasn’t able to practice and rode a knee scooter anytime she wasn’t in the gym. She played with a stress fracture in her shin all season and was still an All-American. So just imagine how much better she is now that she’s healthy. She’ll be in the running for Big 12 POY. Kara McGhee is also a great addition. Baylor has never had two middles who were serious offensive threats, that’s always been the one big missing piece. She’ll take some time to get adjusted to the college pace but in a few years, she may be better than Fanning when it’s all said and done. Predicted lineup for first game of the season. OH1: Pressley OH2: Milana MB1: Fanning MB2: McGhee OPP: van der Mark S: Lockin L: Bramschreiber DS for Milana: Wulf DS for van der Mark: Hunt

McGhee is definitely an early value-add to the team. Her and Lockin connect well. I am really impressed by Van der Mark. She’s so terminal. Re Pressley. Maybe its her cockiness or “swagger” but she def is the leader of the team. I really love what she brings! Agreed on the smarter shots, esp on the out of system swings. Your lineup prediction looks about right.

Do you think Milana will get subbed out? It looked like in preseason videos and such that she's in to serve and play defense. She did play 6-rotations at Maryland against better players across the net consistently. She was second on Maryland's squad each season in digs too. Love to see her play 6-rotations.

In the scrimmage, she only played backrow to serve and then would get subbed out when they lost the point. Last year Milana always got subbed out when she was playing opposite for Braya Hunt. Wulf will most likely be her sub this season and she’ll deliver a much better first contact consistently.

Your lineup prediction looks about right. I think Van De Mark is still a huge liability. She’s not good out of system (makes way too many errors, is slow and this makes blocking mistakes that should be easy for most opps, and only is really terminal on perfect sets. She hit in the net several times and can’t control a swing that’s more than 4 feet off the net. I feel like there isn’t a solid standout for the opp for Baylor, which could be their biggest barrier to making a deep run post season in the tournament. I wonder if Nicole Thomas should play opposite. She would be a better block and she can at least manage swings a bit better.

Yeah, I am hoping home court advantage will be significant this year. I think Wisconsin will be good this year, but both Baylor and Marquette will be formidable opponents in their home non conference matches. I just wish Sheffield wasn't so freaking particular about his non conference scheduling and would just host a normal non conference tournament so I could watch another Wisconsin match versus Syracuse and a really intriguing Baylor-Marquette match up in the Field House.

I like volleyball, but I want to hang out with my family as much as possible and won't make it to Milwaukee for matches between the other teams in Wisconsin that weekend. I hope the Badgers get more front court depth and Sheffield gets over himself in scheduling so I can watch more good volleyball in the future.

Van der Mark does look a bit awkward going after out of system balls but when the set is there she will crush it. Her blocking wasn’t bad last season and her and McGhee next to each other is quite a big wall. I’m surprised none of the freshman are being considered for OPP. Campbell Bowden especially looked really good in the scrimmage and was the star of the second team. She’s also great in the backrow and wouldn’t need a defensive sub. I didn’t really pay attention to her blocking though so I’m not sure how she’d handle blocking on the right side. In the last few sets, Baylor ran what looked to be like a three middle system in which Nicole Thomas lined up as OPP but when her and Fanning were in the front row, Thomas would play in the middle and Fanning would go to the right side.

What a potential boon for you!

Kansas' exhibition game was pretty sloppy, but you expect that from a young team. I expect Kansas to be a solid top 30 team in the nation. I think it comes down to the play of the outsides and serve/serve receive. If Jada Burse was still on the team, Kansas could've been a top 20 type squad, but without her who will be the terminal hitter?
Setter and Middle Blockers are pretty much set. Nielson has come in and been a very stable setter. Which has allowed Ennis to be in the back row. Last year, Ennis was a setter but also was one of the better passers on the team. You will probably see her in a Alyssa Goehner (Minn)/ Nicole Dalton (TX) role. So a player who can attack from the backrow and also be a secondary setter. In the Middle, Langs and Hill will both be pretty consistent.
Outside Hitter is the huge question mark. Hitting in general is a huge question mark. Smith and Van Driel (who is originally a middle) both struggled mightily in the exhibition. Smith hit .135 and Van Driel hit.000. The team only hit .118 for the whole match. The team has to hit better. I think you throughout the year you will see Morgan Christon (Kansas' top recruit) become more involved in the game much like Bechard did last year with other freshmen. Ennis and Langs did not become starters until 5 games in the season last year.
On the Right Side, Freshman Richael Hickman will start and probably play 6 rotations for KU. If she plays well, she may be a candidate for Big 12 freshman of the year. She will need to be Kansas' go to hitter. Smith is solid, but she's more of a supporting cast type player. Hickman will need to be the star early and often.
The littles will have to be better for Kansas this year. Nelson and Angello will be the main two littles. Without being able to watch the game its hard to give judgement on how well they passed, but WSU did get 5 aces. What makes me uncomfortable about Kansas is that Kennedy Farris who joined the team only 10 days before the season STARTED the whole match. I don't know if that means everyone else was playing horribly or if she is just that good. But that leaves me wondering. Also, serving was awful as KU had 15 service errors in the game. Hopefully that's a one time thing because you can not give away 15 points.
With all that said, Kansas is still a very young team with only 3 seniors. And those senior's replacements are already known. Angello will probably be the future libero, Christon and maybe Schmidt (2020) will take Smith's place and Crawford (2020) will come in next year and replace Zoe Hill. If Kansas can be in the top 25 and even better the top 20, look for them to make noise in 2020 and 2021.

Hey everyone, my job has taken me out of Iowa and out East so my time as an Iowa State volleyball season ticket holder has come to an end. I will do my best to keep up with the Cyclones, but my silence on here should be a clear sign that things are going to be different for me in 2K19.
With that said, I'll give some Iowa State thoughts. In my opinion, the only player ISU is really trying to replace is Schaben. Despite her talent, Lazard's multiple suspensions was obviously causing problems (they probably win both at TCU and at Baylor last season if they have her instead of setter Jenna Brandt at middle and are then probably in NCAAs) and the way Herrera played at the end of last year and for Argentina over the summer (she was their second-best player after Lucia Fresco in the match on NBC vs. USA) means she could well be ISU's best player this year. In the spring, Rhodes was already close to back, so I would guess she will be back for that second middle spot. Iowa State is a libero-producing machine, the Cyclones will fill Hillegas' production with ease.
ISU has to figure out what is going on at OH. The RS is secure with Holthaus (who I bet goes 6-rotations this year), but what is going on at OH? Josie Herbst cannot carry the left side, she is a solid L2, but asking anything more of her is probably too much. Brooke Andersen saw her season derailed by injuries, but before the injury she was not living up to her recruiting ranking. That might leave it to Annie Hatch, who I have heard CJL speak highly of in terms of just being able to do a little bit of everything. Makes her sound similar to Ciara Capezio, who for her first two years was a solid all-around player before tailing off. Someone has to step up and lead the line on the left!
I think Iowa State can be on the fringe for the tournament, they have two stars in Herrera and Holthaus, Mauck is a solid option at setter, libero will probably be Enna and won't be an issue regardless of who it is, Rhodes is serviceable as a second middle, if she can block like she did pre-injury, that would be awesome. It all comes down to the outsides, if Hatch pans out and/or Andersen bounces back, I think ISU is in the battle for third with TCU (a loaded team who just needs a setter).
OU last year reminded me of an early CJL team, which is credit to LGW. They would not beat themselves, which takes you over the top when you play your game and the other, better team does not (Iowa State's loss to OU last year featured the worst match of Schaben's career). I just don't know if OU has the hitting talent now to make the next step towards being a tournament team. I would rather have Kansas' future, but for just this year, I think Iowa State will be better than Kansas again. Who knows what you get with K-State, Suzie always has a surprise up her sleeve from a redshirt or a walk-on, but they need help. Tech and WVU are non-factors.
I'll try to make an appearance here or there and will hopefully get to tune into the Cyclones and the rest of the Big 12 a little bit. Enjoy the season!
