Roster on 2019 VNL website, but no official announcement from USA Volleyball: www.volleyball.world/en/vnl/women/teams/usa%20unitedstates/team_rosterSetters: Hancock, Poulter, Lloyd, Carlini Middles: Adams, Dixon, Gibbemeyer, H. Tapp, Rettke, Washington, Ogbogu, P. Tapp Outsides: Kingdon-Rishel, Larson (Cap.), Thompson (or OPP?), Wilhite, Bartsch-Hackley, Hill, Courtney (or L?), Foecke, Lee, Robinson (or L?), Rolfzen Opposites: Drews, Thompson (or OH?), Lowe, Rivers, Cuttino Liberos: Wong-Orantes, Courtney (or OH?), Robinson (or OH?), Lake, Akiu Notables: no Foluke, Murphy, or Plummer So excited to see Cuttino on at least the preliminary roster because her athleticism reminds me of destine hooker. IMO the rightside and setter position are what is "holding the USA back". I put that in quotes because getting first at VNL and fifth (I believe) at world champions is not horrible at all, but I think with an increase in the rightside production and a more consistent setter the results will be more consistent.

So who are we getting Week 1? In exactly one month we've got Bulgaria/Japan/Belgium... potentially our softest week. I'm going to guess we see something like this:
S: Lloyd, Poulter Middles: Dixon, Gibbemeyer, Ogbogu, Washington Outsides: Larson, Wilhite, Kingdon-Rishel, Lee Opposites: Drews, Cuttino Liberos: Courtney, Robinson

Makes sense given the competition and her being inexperienced.

May 11 for the final unchangeable list for the entire VNL season. From their website:
"The list must be reduced to 25 players by 11 May, the entry deadline."

Rettke is only listed as 180 cm. lol! Isn’t she like 6’8”?! Yeah, that should be 203 or 204, depending on how they round. Per Sheffield, Rettke will be spending most of the summer in Anaheim, minus the time Wisconsin is in Europe. I got the impression she was just going to be training. He didn’t say anything about VNL.

That pool play in Conegliano, Italy with USA, Italy and Serbia is something to look forward to. I’m soooo tempted to make that trip!

Plummer was rumored to be playing with the team this summer so that’s why I think there s confusion as to why she isn’t on the list. I’m surprised that some players aren’t on it. I think Courtney should right now, at least for this season be put solely on the lib roster, she isn’t ready to hit yet especially with taking time off of jumpingneoth her acl, passing will be much more reasonable and logical in chances of making the team than hitting. March must have a soft spot for Wilhite because he puts her on every team and she never plays and when she does nothing happens. Would’ve liked to see her replaced with quade or Plummer. I also think holly toliver should’ve been given a chance, she is a physical lefty who could be very good, but that’s not my choice obviously. Also, what on earth is inky doing??? Is she playing? I know injury has plagued her but once she’s healthy I would expect her to be put on a roster.

So what week does Lincoln fall into. I think if Foecke does make the VNL roster she would be part of the group in Lincoln along with Larson, and Robinson.

Foluke’s Jersey number is 16 and no other player was assigned her number so Karch must finally be trying to choose the next two best middles for 2020. Also Jordan Thompson is assigned Murphy’s number 12. I’m pretty sure that means Murphy got the axe. With the addition of Cuttino and Rivers I think it’s a safe bet that Thompson is playing OPP. So as it stands: S: Lloyd, Hancock, Carlini, Poulter L: Robinson, Courtney, Lake, Akiu, JW-O OH: Larson, Hill, MBH, Wilhite, Kingdon, Foecke, Lee, Rolfzen MB: Adams, Dixon, Gibbemeyer, Ogbogu, Washington, Rettke, Happ, Papp. Opp: Lowe, Drews, Cuttino, Rivers, Thompson 9 must be cut for the final roster to be 21 players. Since we are fishing for a Libero and a Setter I can see Karch trimming down the OH/MB positions more than normal. Last year the roster was 6 each for OH/MB and 3 each for S/L/OPP. That being said Robinson, MBH and Courtney can play multiple positions and have a certain level of value and will most certainly remain on the roster. I personally would like Lloyd to ride off into the sunset but that clearly isn’t going to happen......yet. So to wrap up here is who I would cut but still use for other tournaments (Pan Am Games/Cup - NORCECA Champs): JW-O, Wilhite, Kingdon, Rolfzen, Adams, Happ, Papp, Rivers, Thompson. And if possible, Cut Lloyd and add Plummer (who is also versatile @oh/OPP) and this roster is a good blend of youth and veterans. That’s my two cents 👏🏻😉

I would really like Karch to experiment with rosters throughout the VNL. I love to see Cuttino, because she is blossoming at Pomi and she'll be there for two more seasons too! (She has some major Hooker vibes). Foecke will be exciting to see as well on the big stage too. Wilhite and Rolfzen make me curious though because Wilhite seemed to be AWOL from Stuttgart for a majority of the season and Rolfzen to my understanding hasn't been in any top league competitions. Also curious as to Thompson, although she's putting up wild numbers at Cincinnati, is their competition prepping her enough for international play?? I can't see her being as efficient or terminal but would be a good sight for her future if she makes a roster. And where's Abercrombie? I hear lots of good from her club play this season, surprised she isn't getting a nod. But I can expect to see a lot of the newbies/college kids getting on the first weeks roster as some of the players like MBH and Carlini will just be getting back to America from CEV and A1 playoffs.

JWO over Benson seems odd with her not playing overseas. Kingdon and Wilhite was played little to none this past pro season. Rolfzen, Rivers and Thompson don't seem to have the competition level this past year to be ready for VNL play (Rivers I say because her lack of height and putting into consideration the kind of numbers she puts up in a league like Germany, what would she do in Italy or Turkey??). Same thing with Papp, Germany is weaker but she did always put up consistent numbers. Happ looked to be used sparingly at Bergamo, she never seemed to score over 10 pts a game... For Adams, well... I think her days, like Lloyd are numbered.

I would like to see the following cut: H. Tapp, Rettke, P. Tapp, Kingdon-Rishel, Wilhite, Rolfzen, Rivers, Wong-Orantes, Akiu Rettke to be used in every other tournament that doesn’t conflict with the Badgers’ European trip, Akiu because I don’t think her/Lake will get significant time behind Robinson/Courtney. It could go either way. The one cut will get good time in other tournaments. But if the leash is short for the liberos I’d rather see Lake get in some VNL time than Akiu. There’s just no way Adams doesn’t make the final cut, and I want to see Thompson play. There’s just no depth at oppo now that Murphy is out too.
