We are in Salzburg for two days, scheduled to be in Vienna for one day before we head to Italy. Guess I can wait and see if Mary Lake makes the roster for that week. I was literally in Salzburg last week. Beautiful place. Make it up to that big castle for the most epic of views! I’m a Sound of Music nerd, so I’m pretty excited. I spent one day there about 15 years ago. Just enough time for the SoM bus tour. This time we’re doing it on electric bikes! Also visiting some beautiful lakes, of course the fortress, and spots in the old town. Hoping the rain holds off for the 2.5 days we’re there!

It was posted by the fivb that hill was the no. 1 receiver and Robinson the 3rd. I’m not sure how USA could have different stats but who knows. VNL Player RankingsThey only ranked players who had more than 200 reception attempts. Larson only had 116, which seems to support the idea that teams avoid serving her. Also the ranking is based on one of the weirdest passing formulas I've seen: (perfect passes - errors)/total receptions. If you just add in Larson, she would have been 4th, right behind KRob. Hill had a really good tournament passing-wise, but you can't use one tournament to decide she's better in serve-receive than Larson... Hill has improved quite a bit since she debuted in 2013 (?) for the NT, but of the world's top OHs, Larson is still the best passer, digger, and OOS setter. So do you think Larson is a better option at libero than Robinson ? Cause if Larson is the bets passing OH in the country I assume you think that? I’ve actually wondered if March would ever try Larson at libero amongst all of this libero debacle. Robinson is a great ball control player but is behind in the defenseive end compared to the world best, only 1.33 digs per set last year. Also with hill, she passed great with imcoco in all the games I’ve watched, and vnl is 6 weeks long so for hill to pass well for a month and a half is pretty good, I think her long arms help her a lot. I want USA to get a real deal libero so badly, maybe it’s lake? She is VERY short which makes things harder but i think she’ll do good. I fell like Kenzie could’ve been amazing.

This really is the strangest thing to me. How can a country the size of the USA not produce a stellar libero candidate for the NT. I'm really hoping Lake thrives on the international scene, because we could really use her.

I would think libero's don't make much more then what their cost of living would be overseas. Plus it seems like most teams choose a native to play at the position. We had 2 or 3 this past year?

I think we will see a healthy dose of Courtney this entire season with Lake just this summer. Akiu and J-WO will also see some action later. I’m pulling for Lake to be the better defending Libero because that is the only position she plays. She reads the game as a Libero, not an OH who has converted to Libero.
Watching Courtney play at the 2017 WGCC she really struggled on defense but was great at passing. As soon as our Libero/back row starts covering tips and even occasionally digging the big guns like Egonu, Boskovic and Sloetjes we will be getting back to business. If we get the setter positions down and our offense runs smoother PLUS all the mentioned above defensive gains....this team should be unstoppable AND with tons of new younger depth ready to shine.....we should at least be medal contenders if not gold medal contenders come Tokyo.
Everything just has to click in the system. That is the best we can hope for since Karch won’t abandon his system.
Here’s hoping 🤞🏻

Might not mean much, but from the last practice it was Drews/Poulter, Hancock/Thompson as pairs in games. Poulter is the taller setter. I’ll bet she is the starter with Drews. Thompson/Hancock will be the double sub. He will probably rotate the middles and outsides with 2/4 playing two games and the other 2/4 getting one game each. Foecke/Lee will both probably be L1 Kingdon/Wilhite will be L2 Quick question about the middles? Would you want the stronger (Ogbogu/Rettke) of the two to play M2 opposite the setter? Or the other way around? As I understand things M1 is in the front row with the setter correct? Sorry I don’t know the answer here so I’m asking.....?!

I read somewhere that L1 and M1 are on either side of the setter and L2/M2 are with the Opp when the setter is in the back row. So I guess this would be rotation 1? Correct me if I’m wrong.

I think hentz has the potential to be one of the best in the world once she trains in a true defensive system, right now Stanford gives her half the court which works collegiately, I don’t think she would be worse given less court like international teams do

Isn't a libero that can pass more of a priority? Certainly Banwarth had her moments where she made some great digs but she was more of a passing libero. Or is this just what Karch needs to fit his system?

Or is this just what Karch needs to fit his system? It’s what March needs for his system, that’s what he has 6’2 liberos. Hentz is not the BEST passer in the ncaa, but she’s certainly at the top, she is widely seen as the best lib. If she trained and had international coaching, she could develop her passing pretty well. She could be the libero for USA that China and Serbia have for themselves

Hentz is not the BEST passer in the ncaa, but she’s certainly at the top, she is widely seen as the best lib. This is probably a bit of hyperbole, “widely” can definitely be contested. Whether you agree with the decision or not, there are quite a few coaches who would draft Lake first, and probably a few who are dumb enough to pick White before Hentz. I’m not saying who is for sure better, but more people say hentz is the best libero in the country, whether she is or not, that’s is what most people, will say that don’t have a bias for either team just in being around volleyball and ncaa women’s volleyball you hear about hentz more than any other liberos

I got the impression during the NCAA tourney Karch was pretty critical of Heinz. Did I get the wrong impression?
Stanford didn’t win the championship match without her. I do think she needs to stay on her feet more. She seems to flail a lot.

She has some instincts that just can't be taught. I wish she were in the gym right now.

While she does things that others can’t and reads the game well, HABITS don’t go away easily. However, I do think she can be really really good if she’s not expected to dig 50+% of the court
