My hosting service that handles my websites got hacked early this morning and every Windows-based site they host has their files encrypted with ransomware. They are trying to solve the problem and recover all the files but no success so far. I have no idea how long this may take to resolve. I'll let you know if there is any progress. My email is also gone so if anyone is trying to reach me about the problem, I have no idea and can't respond.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Still no ETA for the site. They continue to report they are working on it but have not indicated if they have made any progress yet.

The one bright spot is that it's a good time for the site to be down, relatively speaking.
Good luck Rich.

Should have hosted on a Linux/Unix system ... oh well, Windows was a security risk from day one Back in my "real working days" I did work on Unix systems and my first VB site was built in 1995 on that but it was all just a static site. I only started RichKern.com to use as a "toy" to learn more about dynamic programming on a Windows-based machine. Security was of no concern to me because I was just playing with the site. I never dreamed it would become what it has today since that was not my goal. Going back now to reprogram about 1500 web pages would be a pretty daunting task. This is the first real significant hack along with a couple other minor ones. Yes Windows is a risk and a fairly easy and popular target but the ease of use and learning out way the disadvantages to me.

The one bright spot is that it's a good time for the site to be down, relatively speaking. Good luck Rich. I've been very lucky on that count. Last year my previous server gave me a weeks notice that they were shutting down after I had been with them since 1999 and that happened in March. That caused a lot of extra work but only about a day's downtime. Two previous minor hacks also happened in the spring but caused no downtime, just a lot of extra work finding how they were getting in and plugging the hole (my security error in these cases) and now this one also in the spring.

Yippee! The company is reporting all of the Netherlands servers are back online. Wonder when they are going to start working on the USA?

Do we need to worry about hacked payment and/or CC info?

Do we need to worry about hacked payment and/or CC info? Definitely not. When payments are called in to me with the CC info, I write them on a piece of paper, log them in to Paypal and then shred the paper right away and that CC info never goes through my site. When you pay by CC online, that doesn't go through my site either. The only thing that is noted is that you paid but NO CC INFO IS LOGGED on the site or in my office. As far as registration information, the best info I have so far is that the hackers were only interested in the ransom for fixing the files and no personal registration data was compromised. I don't have any full report on what happened yet but will be asking more questions once my service provider gets their mess cleaned up.

FINALLY! Slowly coming back online. I am getting email but it looks like any thing sent since April 23 is lost. It looks like the database was restored from a backup on April 10. I'll try to piece together any registrations and payments since them but please be patient.
Still don't have direct access to database so can't tell all of what might be missing. I know that any new recruits added between April 10 and April 23 are not in the database at this time but will be added once I get direct access to the database.
Also, any registration or payments during that time are also lost in the database. I will be fixing the payment info shortly but the registrations will have to be completed again. I can tell who they were and will be notifying them after I have access to the database to confirm the lost data.
Very sorry for all of this interruption but thank you for your patience.
