The US did not end Week 3 of the VNL on a high note with a loss to Brazil, but things will only get harder in Week 4 when the US faces the likes of China and Turkey. So what must the US do to improve itself in Week 4? Since this group includes four out of the top five teams in the current VNL standings, it might be difficult to recognize progress. Well, win or lose, we can see how players perform and whether they have done better.

So getting. Anew coach will help this US team win. ? Last I checked. You need players that can terminate to be successful. Iam sorry getting a new coach and changing the way the US runs it’s system is not gonna make them win big matches . Players need to be accountable.

I think Kelsey Robinson should go back to being the libero. There’s no way she will start ahead of Larson, Hill or MBH. She is so much of an upgrade to who we have now and it’s going to free up space for a young OH to experience the Olympics as well. Why have 2 ineffective and inexperienced liberos?

Since I like to beat a dead horse apparently... I just find it unfathomable that we have such an issue developing liberos. I understand the challenge with graduating players finding opportunities overseas to get the reps. I get that the NCAA limits their development early since they don't see the serves/offensive speed/etc of pro leagues. But, it seems to me it would be a much easier transition for a NCAA libero/DS to become either a passero type or at LEAST on par with/an upgrade defensively from our OH-converted experiments. I'm glad Lake is getting (limited) opportunities, but we're awfully light in that area when you think about the deep bench of middles or even setters to an extent. I don't dislike Courtney, but she is not the answer (see: tip coverage).
I do appreciate that we are seeing more youngers getting significant time, like Rettke and Thompson. I will be very curious how KK rotates the opposites next week.

I don't dislike Courtney, but she is not the answer (see: tip coverage). Picking up tips has been an issue for years. At what point is it a system issue and not an individual player issue? (Not saying Courtney is the answer, but this has been an issue for a while)

What gets me is that Jordan Thompson has been pretty solid all tournament and to my eyes is serving, blocking and defending better than Drews. Drews is just (surprisingly) more efficient in attack and also has been starting against tougher opponents. What I don’t get is why we didn’t see Thompson vs Brazil? I guess I just want her to start more but I think she will likely see some action this week because Lowe and Drews will likely struggle against all of the other opponents in this pool because all of them have very good tall blockers.
I also think Hancock and Carlini are the best setter combo.
I’m curious to see how Carlini, Lowe and MBH perform this week.
I think China will win the pool and either Turkey or USA winning two matches. I see Poland being in the mix but unless Wolosz is starting I see them coming up short.

(Not saying Courtney is the answer, but this has been an issue for a while) Since it's lingered for years, it has to be a system issue - not personnel. We give up tips in our defense. How many of the tips that beat us are just a "good shot" vs how many are tips that we should absolutely be picking up? What's the percentage breakdown?

Poland looked like they're still out of energy and Smarzek had no help at all.

Thompson wasn't good at all against Bulgaria, Italy and D.R. She started against Italy and DR, but had to be replaced. Drews did much better.

USA and Poland desperately want tomorrow’s match. USA has an easier week 5, but 7-5 going into the last week does not leave much comfort.
(Of course USA could still beat China, and Poland over Turkey, but it’s unlikely)

I enjoyed both matches yesterday in Jiangmen, China, which is just south of Shanghai for all of you geography enthusiasts. I didn't expect Poland to struggle so much, especially in set 1. Even though China rested the 6'7" MB Yuan Xinyue, they still had a block party, mostly led by their longtime MB Yan Ni. Yao Di started at setter to rest Ding Xia except for a double sub in set 3. Zhu Ting played the entire match, but was not used as much as usual. Li Yingying also played the entire match at the other OH position.
