I enjoyed both matches yesterday in Jiangmen, China, which is just south of Shanghai for all of you geography enthusiasts. I didn't expect Poland to struggle so much, especially in set 1. Even though China rested the 6'7" MB Yuan Xinyue, they still had a block party, mostly led by their longtime MB Yan Ni. Yao Di started at setter to rest Ding Xia except for a double sub in set 3. Zhu Ting played the entire match, but was not used as much as usual. Li Yingying also played the entire match at the other OH position. What are your observations on the second match? I guess you're referring to the 1st match of the day here. The first two sets were a combination of the US team having inconsistent setting and two outside hitters who are more known for their passing skills vs. a Turkey team that played about as well as they are able to. Their libero brought plenty of oohs from the crowd, as well as every time Karakurt hit the ball. She (Karakurt) is a crowd favorite in China. Kelsey Robinson also received her share of love as some Chinese fans remember her stint in the Chinese Volleyball League. I also attended the VNL finals in Nanjing last year in which the US beat Turkey in the finals. If the US qualifies for this year's finals, I think that we'll see a more polished team with at least one more efficient out of system hitter.

Turkey should be able to put up a better fight against China this time around than compared to what happened at WCH. Ebrar who has been efficient throughout the tournament will be key. This should be a preview of what we will see when they face off again in the IOQT.

This should be a preview of what we will see when they face off again in the IOQT. Yildirim is not Baladin. She is a better back court defender and passer than an offensive threat. I’m not sure Ismailoglu and Yildirim can offer enough back up offense to support Karakurt who will likely be up against Yuan Xinyue and Zhu Ting in the block. I give China the edge here but with Baladin and Erdem (should they play in the finals) it will be a pleasure to watch that battle. Akoz will also need to be in good form. I saw she is having issues with one of her legs. You are correct that the IOQT is Turkey’s best chance to qualify for the Olympics. The CEV qualifier will be a blood bath with the loser of Italy/Netherlands from IOQT Pool F likely claiming the berth.

China just beat Turkey 3-0, although the first set was close. I think I saw improvement in both teams.

I think Guidetti is quite cunning. We may not see Turkey at full strength until the IOQT. With the following lineup I think Turkey could really push if not beat China:
S: Ozbay, Naz OH: Baladin, Ismailoglu, Ercan, Ozsoy MB: Erdem, Günes, Caliskan, Arici Opp: Karakurt, Boz L: Akoz, Sarioglu
If Naz is in shape and playing well she could help stabilize the double sub. I’m not sure why Arici isn’t playing with the team but I figured she was recovering from an injury.
We could see this roster for the VNL finals (minus Arici) but I doubt it.
Anyone know why Baladin isn’t with the team this week?

She was listed on the national team last year, but didn't even play. Though I would have to say that if both are ready, they could contribute a lot. They will be more of a threat when Melissa Vargas joins them in a few years depending on the process and wait period.

Lang Ping is so smart. Of course she won't put her best line against Turkey since they are in the same group at the OG Q. I bet she will do the same in the final round if they have to face each other.

You don't have to be really smart to know not to show your hand in Poker, but you do have to be really dumb to deliberately show your hand.
Every international coach thinks about this. It's not because they're cunning or smart--even the dumb ones think about it.

Neither side were showing their full strength and likely starting line-up for the Olympic qualifications in yestersay's match, but we can see hints from the match.

If everything goes through, she will have to wait a few years before being eligible to play for the Turkish national team. Why Turkey? That I'm not sure. I don't think she has any personal ties to the country and she only played there this past season. People from Fenerbahce seen her potential and probably got into her head about joining the national team. I know the Cuban Volleyball Federation has a lot of problems which is why some of their male players decided to leave the country and play elsewhere (Juantorena to Italy, Leon to Poland, and Leal to Brazil).
