It was a quote that reflected the opinion of the person who made it. The idea that failing to "question" that particular quote was some sort of journalistic failure is ridiculous. This isn't some grand tactical scheme about evidence or discovery. The effect on the introduction of evidence, or on discovery, is negligible at this point. Those other entities either knew something relevant, or didn't and the plaintiff's lawyers would find that out easily enough, either through discovery with Walton or from those entities, whether they were named parties in the suit or not. The explanation for adding them now is simple: they have deeper pockets. A failure to be skeptical is always a failing in a journalist and if a single rationale for an act is presented and presented without skepticism, that rationale is effectively endorsed. Lets say that there is a woman who made an assault or harassment allegation to someone at the Lakers against Luke previously. The previous accuser isn't willing to testify or maybe she is. How does that evidence come in if its only a case against Luke? Is that a serious question? She would be called or subpoenaed as a witness.

LUKE WALTON NBA WILL NOT DISCIPLINE After Sexual Assault Investigation Sacramento Kings head coach Luke Walton will NOT be punished by the NBA ... after the league investigated claims he sexually assaulted a female reporter. Walton was accused of forcing himself on former L.A. Lakers reporter Kelli Tennant in a Santa Monica hotel room back in 2014. 5 years later, Tennant filed a lawsuit against the head coach ... which sparked an NBA and Kings investigation. The Kings and the NBA released a joint statement on Friday, announcing there was insufficient evidence to support the allegations. www.tmz.com/2019/08/23/luke-walton-sacramento-kings-head-coach-not-disciplined-sexual-assault-investigation/

"The investigatory team was led by Sue Ann Van Dermyden, from the Sacramento law firm Van Dermyden Maddux, and Elizabeth Maringer, Senior Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of the NBA."
The statement continues ..."During the investigation, more than twenty individuals were interviewed, including Coach Walton, and numerous documents and other relevant materials were reviewed."
"The investigators made repeated attempts to interview Ms. Tennant, but, through her counsel, she declined the opportunity to participate. The investigation is considered closed unless new evidence becomes available."
What would be the benefit of her not interviewing, a chance she changes her story or has inconsistencies?
If the police and investigators couldn't find anything, what does she have to gain by continuing the civil suit?

If the police and investigators couldn't find anything, what does she have to gain by continuing the civil suit? Were the police involved? I only see mention of the Sacramento Kings and NBA hired investigators. She may have evidence that she chose not to share with the two investigators. She probably has zero interest in Walton being sanctioned by the league, so what would she have to gain by giving up evidence her legal team may be holding close to the vest pending discovery in her civil suit? P.S. I wasn't in the hotel room. I'm only speculating.

P.S. I wasn't in the hotel room. I'm only speculating. "Tennant owes the NBA nothing, and her priority is and should be her lawsuit. The NBA could have waited for the lawsuit to be resolved to conclude its own investigation, but its leaders almost certainly wanted to wrap this up before the start of training camps.
The NBA left that big detail out of the statement because this statement has one function: Telling basketball fans that, whatever happens, it’s not the NBA’s fault. It’s Tennant’s. Because Tennant did not talk to the NBA for its investigation, but Walton did, and so he got a nice reward for doing so—a clean slate as far as the association is concerned.
Expecting a private person—who is not your employee, and who remains involved in an ongoing legal action—to participate in your company’s internal investigation of the employee who is being sued is ridiculous." deadspin.com/the-nba-tries-to-make-its-luke-walton-problem-go-away-1837515337

Whatever the truth is, I hope it eventually comes out.
(For myself, I'm inclined to believe Tennant, but I wasn't in the hotel room either.)

I honestly feel bad for her either way, if something happened obviously but also because she's run out of job options and this didn't help her land anything new.

The benefits of her interviewing are zero and the risks are substantial because a party with an interest in Luke Walton could then judge and characterize her and her having participated in the "investigation" would be interpreted by many as her vouching for the honesty and fairness of said investigation
