I'm surprised to see Clayton starting since she is not eligible for this season. I understand it's just a foreign tour and most likely everyone will play but their next in line outside would compete with the other starters.
Also wondering if the Buffs will attempt at a 6-2 with DeLuzio this season, sadly the six subs for this game won't allow that.

I bet they change the line-up for each set.
I'm guessing they will do the 6-2 come August -- now that DeLuzio is healthy again...but who knows. Coach usually believes DeLuzio should be on the court, so the other option is libero (what she was recruited for). DeLuzio and Ewert are pretty equal as setters, but I believe DeLuzio is a bit better in defense and out-of-system sets, and Ewert is a bit better in blocking and back sets.

1st set notes: - Buffs did great in serve-receive, and then did horrible in it - Deluzio was great in out-of-system setting - Clayton has a heavy arm and got some good kills - Neverdowski did a decent job as libero - The CU block did a good job on soft blocks and stuff blocks
I would like to see the 6.6" MB, Kuehl, play!

China up 17-14 in 2nd set. Colorado timeout. Serve-receive needs to be cleaned up. This starting line-up is almost all new incoming freshman.

China wins 2nd set, 25-22. Line-up was almost all incoming freshman. They were impressive while in system, but they were not in their spots and slow to cover spots when out of system.

Colorado wins 3rd set, 25-18. Colorado wins the 1st Chinese match, 2 sets to 1.
3rd set was a mixture of veterans and incoming freshman.
MATCH NOTES - Leah Clayton is impressive. She can pass, hit, play smart, etc. It shows that she was the Player of the Year for her old conference, and why she was chosen for the US collegiate team - CU Freshman need to know where to be (especially when out of system) - Deluzio and Ewert are still as good as ever at setting - Serve-receive needs to be cleaned up; as well as coverage on blocks and tips - Colorado serving has stepped up a bit since last year - CU blocking did a great job, and probably was the highlight of the night as a team
Good first match and win for the Buffs on their China tour!

Also wondering if the Buffs will attempt at a 6-2 with DeLuzio this season, sadly the six subs for this game won't allow that. I think it's a shame if they run a 6-2 since DeLuzio and Ewert are probably their 2 best players - it would suck to have each only play half the game and never on court at the same time. Any thought to moving DeLuzio to libero? I haven't seen her pass, but her defense is ridiculously good. Also, they both have such a high compete level. It must be so hard to bench one of them ever.

Coach has considered Deluzio for libero, but Whipple has improved greatly (she was recently selected for USA collegiate team), that I doubt he would put Deluzio in over her. As I have mentioned, Deluzio and Ewert are two very good setters that are pretty equal overall. Ewert is a bit better at blocking and back-sets (and is a big cheerleader for the team), and Deluzio provides a calm for the team with better defense and out-of-system setting. I have a feeling that Coach will put them in a 6-2 again to keep them happy, but you never know how it will play out. I think they will both be happy doing whatever he wants though. They seem pretty happy at Colorado -- no matter what he decides.

It sounds like CU will be a lot like UW was last year. UW had a strong frosh class that took a few months to get their stride but by November they were playing really well and made the sweet 16. All the best to the buffs; I can't wait to see them and the U play Iowa and Illinois in a few months. I once took an online course through CU so I guess that makes me a bit of an alum.
