Just an interesting discussion of which non-P5 programs can create a buzz in the upcoming 2019 season and potentially make a deep run or even a Cinderella finish in the post-season. Starting with last Volleyball Mag’s final Mid-Major poll in 2018. volleyballmag.com/mid-major-poll-112718/Rank School Total Points Adjusted First Place Votes Adjusted Win/Loss Record Previous Rank 1 BYU 620 23 27-1 1 2 Creighton 601 2 28-4 2 3 Cal Poly 567 0 25-2 4 4 Marquette 549 0 26-6 3 5 UCF 532 0 27-3 5 6 Cincinnati 485 0 25-7 6 7 Dayton 463 0 23-7 7 8 Pepperdine 436 0 21-8 10 9 Denver 410 0 27-2 9 10 San Diego 391 0 16-12 8 11 Colorado State 357 0 23-7 11 12 Northern Iowa 335 0 24-9 12 13 Stephen F Austin 304 0 32-2 13 14 Texas State 290 0 26-6 15 15 Loyola Marymount 275 0 20-9 19 16 Illinois State 259 0 25-7 14 17 Hawai’i 234 0 18-8 16 18 Rice 216 0 24-6 17 19 St. Mary’s (Ca.) 201 0 19-9 18 20 Florida Gulf Coast 160 0 26-6 20 21 East Tennessee State 121 0 28-6 21 22 Kennesaw State 83 0 24-7 23 23 Hofstra 66 0 25-7 25 24 Portland 49 0 18-12 22 24 Wyoming 49 0 20-10 24 Others receiving votes and listed on two or more ballots: Yale, 22; Western Kentucky, 17; New Mexico State, 9; Tulane, 7; James Madison, 6; Miami (OH), 2. There were eight teams mentioned on only one ballot for a total of 22 combined points.

I think Colorado State should be pretty strong. No seniors last year and took Tennessee to 5 in the first round of the tournament. Have to figure out the O2 position and hope their Libero stays healthy. I think they will finish top 5 of mid major programs. They finished below Denver last year but I saw both teams play and CSU would have won that matchup.

BYU will be have an experienced libero in Mary Lake and Cincinnati with pin hitter Jordan Thompson, both playing in the VNL.

Sometimes, guys here/homer fanatics feel that ya can just plug-in some supposed hotshot recruit into a just-graduated icon's spot (RJP, in this case) -- and voila' -- No difference! Uhhh, wrong! These were the rankings from one year ago; many rosters have changed Dramatically due to Seniors moving on. THIS year I can see Cincinnati and/or Creighton making moves.

BYU will likely be the top non P5 team in the country for the foreseeable future. The gap is going to be like Texas vs. the rest of the Big 12 has been. Maybe not VolleyMag rankings, but in terms of something more objective like Pablo. Someone like Creighton, Marquette, UNI, Hawaii, Cal Poly may be similar to BYU in a given year - like Kansas was with Texas in 2015-16, but the recruiting pipeline for BYU is always going to make them the favorite.

CSU loses Maddi Foutz (transferring to DII Colorado Mesa) and Amanda Young (nursing school I think). That's HUGE losses in the backrow for them - the freshman are gonna have to step up for sure. Will be interesting to see where Olivia Nicholson goes. She'll either be 6-rotation OPP or the libero. Offensively CSU needs to figure out L1 (Jackson/Van Liefde) and OPP (Nicholson/Gubser/Colombo) to make a deep run.

Just one match though.

I don't know how high on the list they will be, but I expect Hawai'i to at least return to the top four of the mid majors this season.

I definitely think With Jolie R, and our class, Hawaii is going to make some noise. Jolie was a one woman show against texas (granted pre season) and with the addition of choy, another proven setter, I think Hawaii is poised to finish the season ranked again

Just to echo what others have said, Jolie Rasmussen makes this team so so so much better than last year. If any of the incoming freshman can put up good numbers, this team will be very solid.
