Select your 12-person team.

That was fun. Here was mine:
OH: MBH, Hill, Larson, Robinson MB: Akinradewo, Ogbogu, Dixon OPP: Drews, Plummer S: Carlini, Lloyd L: Courtney
A number of these players could play libero. And a few of the hitters can play both pins.

I chose:
OH: MBH, Hill, Larson, Robinson MB: Akinradewo, Ogbogu, Washington Opp: Drews, Lowe S: Carlini, Lloyd L: Lake
I liked what I saw from Lake, albeit she's still learning. But I thought she held her own enough. Robinson probably the Libero, with Lake there to spell. I did not like Courtney at Libero at all. If not this roster, I could see them dropping the traditional Libero and adding an extra hitter.

Wait, is this who I WANT, or who I think will be picked?

However, it will probably be none of the above and they'll go with Robinson. If so, I assume they'll add another OH? Not sure who that would be. Foecke??

Winning the gold will require OOS kills. It would be smart to bring Foecke, because after MBH, the projected roster has a dearth of big arm talent. Even for all of Hill's attributes, she's average at best OOS, maybe even below average. Robinson and Larson aren't going to deliver kills OOS either. It's not going to happen, but I would take the must have vets (Foluke, Larson, Hill), then pad the roster with players that stress opponents the most and can get points when play is sloppy. OH- MBH, Hill, Larson, Foecke MB- Foluke, Ogbogu, Rettke RS- Lowe/Drews, Thompson S- Carlini, Poulter/Lloyd L- Robinson This would also provide a flexible lineup. Larson can play libero if Robo breaks down. MBH, Foecke, Thompson, Ogbogu, and Rettke can be terminal against most competition. MBH can also play RS. Lowe if she can get into pre-sabbatical form, otherwise take Drews. I take Poulter to back up Carlini if she shows good development during her pro season, otherwise Lloyd for veteran presence. Carlini has it on lock barring injury anyway. Robinson is the best libero we have right now and one year won't change that given how our other liberos don't get international opportunities.

Does anyone recall 2012, when Bown was left off? Wasn’t she starting at the big events (2010 world champs, 2011 World Cup, 2012 Grand Prix) and then left off the London roster - im assuming Foluke will be in Tokyo and selected her among the twelve, but would it be that crazy to see her left off, or maybe not starting?

I chose: OH: MBH, Hill, Larson, Robinson MB: Akinradewo, Ogbogu, Rettke Opp: Drews, Plummer S: Carlini, Hancock L: Courtney (But expect/hope Robinson plays here) Obviously, Rettke and Plummer are the places where I'll get most disagreement. I chose Plummer because I hope that she is moved to OPP in the national team gym and that, in spite of Plummer's pretty awful performance in the USA/Canada scrimmages, she is still terminal on the right side and can grow into that over the next year. I think what I have seen from Rettke suggests she is the best slide hitter on the VNL roster, and her blocking is improving. She's a virtual neophyte to the sport, but improves consistently. I think she'll be ready come the Tokyo games. As much as I am a 1000% Plummer Stan, I don't have enough faith that USA Volleyball/Karch will move her to the right side in time. I think her shot at Tokyo 2020 is closer to pipe dream than it is to reality, although it would be different if she were able to play last summer (there were rumors that she was invited to train with Team USA for the summer and play Pan Am like Poulter did) or if Stanford's summer allowed her to make the VNL Roster. Unfortunately, the circumstances did not work in her favor and I don't think there's enough time for her to develop into an Olympic caliber player for Tokyo (unless she is moved to the right ASAP, which she should be begging if she really wants a chance). It would likely take a really good pro season on the right ( if she even is going pro after NCAA season) for her to even play herself into contention of a roster spot, and even then Thompson has the leg up for multiple reasons.

She'll be 32 next year, so no it would not be surprising if she hit the proverbial wall. I didn't see her most recent season, so I don't know how she's playing of late. But, you'd have to believe that unless father time or injury slow her down that she'll be there.

Wait, is this who I WANT, or who I think will be picked? Who you think will actually make it there. But I’d accept either in the comments to see how much it differs between who we think will make it and who we want to make it to Tokyo.
