They got a new trailer for Mulan, and we see Gong Li as the witch here as well as Donnie Yen as the general:
Hmmmm...what do you think? Has potential or is Mulan more of a "Mary Sue" here?

This is the most promising live-action movie that Disney has done. Minimizing the fantastical elements gave the trailer a more “grand, dramatic and prestige movie” kind of look. For a trailer about Mulan though it seems like they’re showcasing the secondary characters a bit more (maybe because of the lead actress’ inexperience? Who knows). And finally, Gong Li looks amazing.

Yeah, good observation. I think the supporting cast is stellar, like Gong Li, Jet Li and Donnie Yen, so I am not surprised they would be highlighted. As for the lead, Liu Yifei, I think she is inexperienced not so much with general acting (she's been acting for a while and is famous in China) but with being typecast in certain roles (see my first post of the thread). She is familiar with action roles, but this transgender sort of role is new to her. So she would be inexperienced in that aspect.

^ Oh, I haven’t seen her in anything that’s why I thought she’s an up-and-comer. Interesting that you mentioned in the first post that she’s criticized in China for playing these kinds of roles all the time. I wonder how it would translate in a big budget HW movie? and Mulan’s character demands a LOT of charisma from the lead. I hope she delivers.

So no fault on your part. A lot also comes down to the script and the director I think. Whether the dialogue is written well, whether the directing can bring out the performance in her.

I'm just angry that they're taking eddie murphy out. Hehehe, you are not the only one, trust me. But personally, I am fine with that. Some things that work well in animation don't translate well into live-action, especially a wise-cracking little dragon.

Final trailer is out:
Hmmm...looks like it's a going to be quite different to the animation.

Sounds like it will be a total snooze fest. A suck up to try and sell tickets in China (as well as to other ethnic Chinese) by mimicking a traditional Chinese war drama rather than a fun Disney movie.

If you want to see Chinese stories with Chinese characters, just watch Chinese films. Lots of good ones. If you want to see Iranian stories with Persian characters, watch Iranian movies. Don't watch Hollywood versions of [insert foreign culture here] stories with [insert foreign group here] characters. See, e.g., Crazy Rich Asians which absolutely sucked.

I...wouldn't want to draw such conclusions from a trailer. Trailers are deceptive after all. It's like judging a book by its cover. If you have a personal bias against Chinese culture and history, well, that's not so good.

Crazy Rich Asians are more about second or third generation American immigrant experience, it is not the same as a strictly Chinese movie. And I have to say you are in a minority, I know many people who liked Crazy Rich Asians.

If you have a personal bias against Chinese culture and history, well, that's not so good. I just don't see why Disney in particular wants to make something that just seems so serious. The cartoon version of Mulan didn't really do all that well in China, and it sounds like Disney is trying to reverse that. I don't have a problem with Chinese culture and history, but I certainly understand Chinese cinema tropes and I think they're somewhat silly. I've watched a few of them in my day, and I'd hate for Disney to try and emulate that rather than apply their own style. Maybe not relevant to Mulan, but I've also seen the "stupid/lazy/dishonorable westerner" trope in some Chinese movies such as The Great Wall. I've also seen some Chinese military movies including a couple trying to be like Top Gun, only without the self-aware humor about how campy it was. nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/we-watched-chinas-version-top-gun-so-your-wouldnt-have-88836Also - didn't Chinese authorities put the kibosh on time travel (time shifting) movies? That was one trope they were trying to stop.

As for Chinese cinema tropes...if you are referring to mainland movie and tv series, I agree, but that is more a product of censorship and lack of creative freedom. Hong Kong and Taiwan's more commercial cinema used to buck those trends.
