Reid has the fire and motivation of proving himself in a new sport; it's still fresh to him, so motivation is pretty easy. Talk to the guys who have been in the sand for 20 years...I would also imagine Reid's motivation to continue indoors is pretty low, after doing it for years and years.

Why does Jason Lochead still have a job?
Some age-related drop off is to be expected but the complete collapse that has happened internationally and near complete one on the AVP is - at least it seems to me - in part mental, whether thats motivation, strategy etc. opinion may vary, but with a team this experienced, surely managing the team's mental game, rather than teaching skills is a prime responsibility?

It’s got to be unprecedented for a player coming out to the beach at such a late age to have so much success, especially only a few years after an ACL reconstruction. Motivation is one thing, but you’ve also got to have some genetic physical gifts to accomplish what he has done.

Is making one final really "so much success" Almost any accomplishment is unprecedented because he came out later than pretty much anyone ever. Agree 100% on the genetic gifts though

Simple. Nick has never been a great player, and now Father Time is catching up with him. Phil is...tall.

According to Phil, Nick is one of the hardest working people he knows. So I don’t think Phil will continue to play and put up with someone who’s lazy.

It is definitely a combination of age and complacency, for both. The best thing Phil ever did, was drop Nick for Todd; Todd made Phil be a professional (i.e. training physically, preparing mentally, work ethic, etc). I knew Nick personally when he was a student at FSU, and played with and against him when he was coming up pre-Phil. He was a non-stop worker, working out like a mad-man, training, doing anything he could to be successful, which obviously worked. They make no secret about going home to their separate homes in FL, not training together, basically showing up to tournaments and playing. It's hard to be a professional athlete, especially to maintain that physicality into your late 30's & 40's. I think they are doing what they can to hopefully play in Tokyo, and then ride off into the sunset to play video games, smoke weed, and hangout with the fams in FL. Doesn't seem like they care as much as they used to, at least off the court...everyone cares when it's game time. Just to clarify, this is not a knock on either one of them; I cheer for them to win against everyone they play, but time does take a toll on your body and motivation, happens to us all. Except if your name starts with Reid and ends with Priddy ...and what about Jake Gibb? Doesnt seem to have any issues mentally or physically.

...and what about Jake Gibb? Doesnt seem to have any issues mentally or physically. like I wrote above, "the heart knows no master" Jake's heart is still into playing. Phil's isn't. If Phil were still highly motivated, he and Nick would podium more times than not. But you can't force yourself to be highly motivated. And that's the bummer. Phil knew a year ago he was sick of it. But in the off season he could not find something that *does* motivate him. He is currently passionless. Like a boat with no rudder.

Jake has also been on a pretty steady decline since 2012 and despite some decent AVP results this year, he and Taylor have been having an awful season by Jake's standards

^ right, but you can tell from his body language, and his words, that he's still into it. If he were going through the motions he wouldn't even get out of Quals.
