Pool D kicks off play today, while everyone else starts tomorrow. (or at midnight) Brazil cruised as expected over Cameroon. Dominican Republic and Azerbaijan is set to begin at 12:45 PDT. Live streaming on the Olympic Channel website: www.olympicchannel.com/en/sports/volleyball/ Good news: Brazil-Cameroon finished less than an hour ago and the replay is already available online. Yay! Azerbaijan-Dominican Republic is a big match. Azerbaijan has Rahimova who is routinely a top scorer, and DR has the return of its all-world libero. The winner of this match should easily handle Cameroon, so it would set up a match vs. Brazil to take the Olympic bid.

Azerbaijan is a mess and Rahimova is probably in negative figures
22-13 DR leads! This is basically their Pan Am Cup starting team but with Castillo back at L, but they look a million times better. Jineiry Martinez also making an impact back at MB.
25-15 DR takes the 1st set, and they're out to a 6-1 lead in the 1st. This is not the Azerbaijan at last year's World Championship, who was competitive even with the big dogs.

I just picture Pri Rivera with a cane and a pack of smokes waiting for her on the sidelines. Love her.

The double-sub caused DR problems as Azerbaijan clawed to within 1 at 21-20, but DR now leads 23-20. T/O Azerbaijan
Rivera with the roar on the sharp cross power hit as DR takes the 2-0 lead with a 25-22 win in the 2nd set.
19-12 DOM closing in on a sweep
25-18 Dominicana sweep!
China-Czech Republic in about 10 hours.. should be all China!

Every time Rahimova got a clean swing Castillo was waiting. Eventually the young Azerbaijan setter stopped setting Rahimova.
Dominican Republic did their homework on her. De La Cruz ate her for lunch at the net.
Anyone know what happened to Jana Kulan? She was superb on the left side during the WCH.
Also the Martinez sisters time in Turkey last season did them some good.
Castillo elevates her team soooooo much! Whoa 😮

I really liked watching Tandara play as an OH. She got aced once but her passing wasn't a liability. Plus she hit 9/14. Granted....the opponent was Cameroon......so it goes with a grain of salt. I am also loving Lorenne the more I watch her play. I was doubtful of Brazil going the distance in this pool. The Dominican Republic should push them but I just think Brazil is a more cohesive team with slightly more depth.
I am curious who will win Saturday between Cameroon and Azerbaijan? I definitely thought the latter would have put up more of a fight. Watching this has me wondering why the FIVB doesn't include any African teams in the VNL? I mean they would get knocked around the first few years but if China on the men's side can be a core team and consistently end up in last place then why not include an African team on the women's side AND the men's side as a core team so they can develop more?
It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense if you are trying to GROW THE GAME........oh well......

China took set 1 , 25-18 over Czech Republic.
Czech was in it the entire set in set 2.. even with a swing to tie it at 24 but China pulls it out, 25-23. Czech service errors gave China 3 of its last 5 points.

Czech Republic up 8-4 in the 3rd set.
16-15 China back in front at the 2nd TTO
25-19 China with the sweep! Not pretty at all, but they finally seem to have woken up in the late 3rd set.

Could any of today’s matches be competitive AND realistically matter when it comes to who wins the pool?

I hope some generous and techy person will list a link on here for the USA match later today as I don't get the Olympic Channel and they'll only let you watch like 20 mins of the match and then cut you off online.

Canada takes Set 1 vs Korea! Trailing early in set 2 though....
Turkey defeats Germany in 4.
Pool B is the toughest pool with Pool F just behind it.
