If Poland, Netherlands and Turkey were in ANY of pools C, D and E they would have likely qualified. USA and Russia had one 5 set test a piece and barely got it over line. Brazil used 8/9 lives but got it done with two 5 set tests.
Azerbaijan, Poland, Bulgaria, and Korea all had good tournaments and exceeded my expectations.
Over the next quad many of these young 2nd/3rd tier teams will start to get better and better which is great for the sport.
FIVB's first order of business next quad is to overhaul the world ranking criteria. Make every match played count just like FIFA does. It just makes more sense.

Terrible coaching by Morrison. It was his worst game with Dutch NT. All the tactics, timing of subs were terrible. They were so close at the end of the game 3 and served to Moki? He should have started Plak, Bongaerts and Lohuis and kept Belien, Djikema and Sloetjes on the bench IMO. I still refuse to believe that Buijs is a better passer than Plak. Plak at least brings more offense.

Exept for Plak, those are worse coaching decisions than the ones Jamie made. lol Did you even watch the match? I watched the first set and a half, and then switched back and forth. You have to start Sloetjes and Djikema, and make appropriate--and better--substitution choices -- dragan11 had the right perspective there. You're just arm-chair quarterbacking with your choice of starting line-ups.

Djikema has been setting like her hands are handcuffed, with the due respect. Plak is definitely a better option at the opposite position compared to Sloetjes, who probably is past her prime

Djikema has been setting like her hands are handcuffed, with the due respect. Plak is definitely a better option at the opposite position compared to Sloetjes, who probably is past her prime Sloetjes played fine for the majority of the first set. It would be a mistake from a playe psychology standpoint to not start Sloetjes because she's still the clear leader of this team (whether or not she has accepted that she may be past her prime), while Plak is used to substituting in and out, and it likely wouldn't affect her as much. Egonu started to get unwound around the middle of the first set, and frankly, no combination of Dutch players is really going to stop her when she's in beast mode.

Degenarro was impeccable both in serve-receive and defense.

That would've made the European qualifier even more of a bloodbath, Turkey, Russia, Netherlands(?) Poland(?). But yeah, would have loved to see both Korea and Thailand make it. That Russian win might've saved Poland. Four years ago, the CEV took only the top 8 according to FIVB rankings for their qualifier. At the moment: 7/8 Netherlands/Italy 12 Turkey 15 Germany 16 Bulgaria 19 Belgium 22 Azerbaijan 24 Czech Republic 26 Poland www.cev.eu/Rankings/Women.aspxEurope has their own rankings (CEV) and the European Championships are at the end of this month. I don't know how the math exactly works out, but right now from the 8 listed above, Azerbaijan actually would not qualify. They trail Belarus, who would be the first team out. Croatia would be the last team in. Belarus is right behind Croatia, so maybe they could sneak in if they perform well at the Euro Champs.

Degenarro was impeccable both in serve-receive and defense. I still remember when DeGenarro made her debut to replace an injured Paola Croce leading up to and through World Cup 2011, where she played really well - but Barbolini went with Croce in London. Since then DeGenarro has been so solid for Italy.

Hello !
We have a big scandal here in Poland on the eve of the European qualifier tournament in January ! 13 out of 15 players who participated on Eurovolley have signed the letter in which they demanded from the PZPS (Polish Volleyball Association)to sack coach Jacek Nawrocki immediately (only Magdalena Stysiak and Maria Stenzel refused to sign it). It's not clear when exactly the letter was presented to PZPS or what charges against Nawrocki it contains but according to some reports the players said it is impossible for them to work with him anymore because he doesn't communicate with the team, loses his temper during practices and abuses them and doesn't keep in touch with the players during the league season.
The letter comes as a big surprise, it seemed the atmposhere around the team was significantly better then few years ago.The part about Nawrocki being abusive is also shocking , he always appeared as a mild-mannered, respectful and humble person.
What was the reaction from PZPS : also shocking, they renewed Nawrocki's contract to 2022 , regardless of what the outcome of the January's tournament will be !!!
What a mess !!!

Poland better keep its act together! Honestly they have an equal chance as with NED and TUR to get that slot so this definitely is a development not needed.

It's looking better and better for Turkey as things continue to develop. Netherlands has a new coach but will he be able to get them in shape in time? Also if all of the Polish Team boycotts this tournament then what a waste of two years of development for them. They almost took Serbia to 5 sets in the IOQT. This could open the door for Germany and maybe even Bulgaria to have a shot at the olympic berth. Whoa.
