We have work to do ... no middle attack for starters We have a lot of depth at middle. But, the depth is being tested with Foluke and Chiaka not there. I think we could set the middles a lot more than we do. But, there were maybe a dozen times where you could have gone to the middle but pushed it to the hot hand in Thompson. Or, at the start of the match, Hill. And, given the choice between setting Thompson tonight vs. Washington or Dixon, I'll take Thompson any chance I can. I'd like to see them incorporate the middle more generally. But, not at the expense of a better attacker. And, for those who constantly criticize Carlini every time she sneezes, deal with it. She's our setter and the best option we have There were about 5 plays in the last 2 sets where the middle ran a slide and the set went to JT out of the back row running right behind the middle.... That wasn’t dictated by the defense, just a setter decision.

Jesus Christ Karch....why did he bench Hill?!
Watching the beginning of the match that I missed.
Vasileva came to play. Also Gergana Dimitrova didn’t feature when our rookies played Bulgaria in the VNL. Loved Bulgaria’s fire and scrappy play. They didn’t look this good vs Argentina yesterday.

You just have wonder if Chiaka were on the floor tonight....this wouldn’t have gone to 5. Am I right!? If Rettke plays it doesn’t go 5.... Bulgaria had no answer for her in the VNL opener. She is still too slow to the pins. Also Poulter was setting her in that match.

Bulgaria`s middles: Kills 12/22 and 7/18 USA`s middles: 5/9 and 2/10 LOL.....She can`t set the middles with Larson, Robinson, Hill, Bosetti, Picinini in reception. Our opposites were a combined 21/56 (38%) Theirs went 20/38 (53%) At least our outsides could score. 38% for a OPP is not good especially against such a weak team like Bulgaria. Boskovic is hitting over 60%. In a high level match u would expect your OPP to hit at least 50%.

I'm still confused why the leading scorer after 3 sets did not return. Anyway top three scorers were Larson, Thompson and Hill, next best were 10 points and less. Hill - 15 kills, 2 aces in 3 sets Larson - 18 kills, 3 blocks, 2 aces in 5 sets Thompson - 18 kills, 1 block in 4 sets. I think I agreed with the announcers who said that it was about getting your best passing lineup in the game. At least the best passing lineup without having Larson or Robinson as libero. I think having Robinson and Larson as your to OH's is a bit limiting in terms of offensive firepower, as Hill and MBH would both seem to be more terminal. But, obviously passing is vital. I really thought that for parts of this match, until Thompson turned it on, they were a team without much oomph on offense. I just didn't see Hill making any reception errors, but i had previously stated I was going back and forth between this match and another livestream. Maybe she was struggling, but any time I was watching she was fine.

As a Carlini stan, I too would like to see her set the middles more. But you’re an idiot, looking at you dancedance, if you choose to ignore that she is one of the highlights of our current team, and probably the reason we ended up winning that match against a very good (as of tonight) Bulgarian team. Karch has a capable setter on the bench who can set the middle more and chose not to sub her in so I’m going to go with this was part of the system he desires to run. But okay, take the mic and make this about your personal and unfounded disdain. Go off. 🤷🏻♂️ Here's the thing. We only had one offensive middle playing that match. Washington can hit. Dixon cannot. Both Rettke and Ogbogu are MUCH better offensively. We sacrificed offense for blocking. Not sure that'd have been my choice, but so be it. Horse%*$#. Rettke is nowhere near Dixon's level now, in any phase of the game. Nor is that surprising, being a junior in college and all. Homer much? I am so sick and tired of people ragging on these NT players who have dedicated so much of their lives to the sport AND accomplished so much. But the next shiny object ...

Dixon is needed for her blocking because let's be honest it's not Thompson's strong suit.

For her blocking, her serving, her defense, and what offense they need from her.

She absolutely is. Dixon is awful offensively and is only there for her defense and serving.

I'm sure this has been discussed, but I haven't read the threads. Why is the USA down a player, a middle, for this tournament? Ogbogu, I assume. Injured? If so, can't she be replaced?

Ditto (R)uffda!* and avid. Yeah it's amazing how "Blocking" is no longer an essential part of a volleyball match but 6'8" is.
