Wow! There's nothing I hate more than driving around a county to deliver stuff. And bigfan was saying how players don't like meet-n-greets, well, ticket delivery has to be far worse. A meet and greet for the entire athletic dept at the same time is great. A meet and greet just for a volleyball team is alarming. Players and coach's hate them. Why is it great when there are more sports present, and alarming if it is just one sport? Why are players okay with random school sports fans, yet hate to meet their own sports-specific fans? How did you get such knowledge of what (all) players and coaches think?

Isn't this the Beauty Pageant circuit? The old farts hanging out with the Miss America and Miss Universe contestants? Must be worse in less developed countries. But a possible difference is that with the college Meet-n-Greets, the young women are accompanied by their coaches and the attendees are a a mixed bag of young and old, male and female, and all under the watchful eyes of each other. I doubt anything terrible happens. This is just a guess as I've never attended one.

How is that any different from any other Women's team, unless you take the old jokes about volleyball seriously?

How is that any different from any other Women's team, unless you take the old jokes about volleyball seriously? or men's teams, for that matter. if you have a problem with grown adults hanging out with women in their teens/20s, then wouldn't you also have a problem with grown adults hanging out with men in their teens/20s? Thus having those "all sports" gatherings would be just as bad, right?

pre-season Meat-n-Grease are not so good an idea, so teams may want to avoid the food vendors at the state fair.

Didn't ever realize that these college sports meet and greets were akin to a night out at the gentlemen's club.

Didn't ever realize that these college sports meet and greets were akin to a night out at the gentlemen's club. It probably isn't.

There is nothing wrong with the meet and greets. Its a way to sell your program or thank those who donate to your program. I don't think the Hawaii girls would be turned off by such events. They understand that it is part of doing business. Meet and greets can also open up potential jobs down the line and possible future donations to help the program.
UH have had these meet and greets stuff in all sports and the student athletes seems to enjoy them. Football have the Pigskin Pigout tonight. Baseball has the Grand Slam event. Both our basketball team have them in a few months. It just good fun. Let fans get the know the girls/guys more then what you see on tv or on the court/field. I just don't see any downside to these events.

Well middle aged rich guys do have a lot of trouble gaining the attention of attractive young women. Clearly they need to devise some sort of an elaborate scheme where they buy season tickets and make a hefty donation, all so that they can force some poor unsuspecting volleyball player to have a brief conversation with them about volleyball once a year, at a formal event.
Good thinkin'

But you say it’s great, as long as it’s not just tall gals, but short petite gals, and lean young men, and big, husky men, etc etc that people can mingle with, without even being a fan of those people’s sport! What I -think- is that your assumption that the -only- reason boosters could want to meet female VB athletes is some pervy obsession is indicative of -your- thoughts on the matter.

I’d also note that most/all of the meet and greet events I’ve been at have parents with their 5-15 year old kids in tow... along with the players’ parents (often), and the coaching staff.

In a time when people take pictures of their lunch so they can post it on social media, does it really make sense to assume that a desire to meet and or take pictures with athletes is some sort of sex thing?
Last year my dad and I got our pictures taken with (now-former) Mariners pitcher James Paxton. I don't think it was some kind of sex thing, but maybe I secretly have a thing for tall Canadian pitchers? Now I'm confused.
