THE Ohio State University is attempting to get a Federal trademark registration for the word "the".

Funny thing. They decided to start calling themselves THE Ohio State because they didn't want to be confused with Ohio University in Athens.
All the more reason to dislike Ohio State.

Ok, who handles Patents and Trademarks?
Answer: THE United States Patent and Trademark Office
Note: I have bolded a key word above.
Clearly it takes some mighty B1G Rocks to try and trademark "THE" when the granting agency uses it in their own title.

As with all other flagship schools in the state, Ohio State owns the state. The other schools have their alums and local fans but for the majority of the great unwashed denizens of the poison nut state, Ohio State is THE brand, note that I didn't say school because most of their non-alumnus fans probably couldn't spell Ohio State. Ohio State paraphernalia sells in every place where you buy stuff, that is why this is so important to them.
I have been to quite a few football rabid states, this place takes the prize for blind loyalty, maybe in a tie with Oklahoma. Michigan is split between MSU and UM. Virginia is split between VT and UVA.

OSU sold its soul for the sake of football. Sure, that's why it has name recognition, but what a price to pay.
Seriously, why would you be proud of a school whose entire identity is based on football?

Seriously, why would you be proud of a school whose entire identity is based on football? People who don't follow football (or even passively follow football) see Ohio State in other ways. They have a lot of $$$ and do a lot of good research, like other schools. Ohio State has a lot of very good programs in health sciences, law, business, fine arts, engineering, among others. I used to follow football and now I don't so I'm aware of Ohio State's reputation. Frankly, I hate their football program but as a school, I don't associate them solely for their football. Note: I have no association or connection with Ohio State University in any way. None of my family members ever attended Ohio State or even applied there because we hate their football team.
