I believe tryouts start today, so thought it was time to get a thread started. Hopefully there are still a few folks out there that can add to this.
Who will be the top teams this year; can Germantown repeat?
Who are the top players to watch?
Will there be any non-participants heading to Green Bay to watch the state tournament (not counting the girls teams, either)

I would think CMH, Kimberly, and Waukesha West should be the teams to beat this year. Germantown returns a strong core, but replacing Bryce, Carter, and Luke are big shoes to fill. Middleton also might surprise some people with some kids who really bloomed during the club season.
CMH: Chris Brozynski, Jake Chapman, and Zach Solomon Kimberly: Landon Krause, Tommy Clausz, Jaxon Schroeder, and Spencer Herman Waukesha West: Matt Spellman and Alec Boland Germantown: Hans Stelpflug, Drew Jansen, and Jackson VanEngen Middleton: Parker VanBuren
Only listed players to watch from the teams I listed to watch. Apologies for missing anyone or any mis-spellings!

And you cannot ever count out Marquette.

I'll be honest that I don't know what is really coming through the pipeline, but they do still have their stud pin and libero. I agree on Marquette, I thought about them after I posted. If anyone can rally the troops, it'd be Sully. They have several good pieces, but no one with much varsity experience. It should be an exciting year!

I know we at Middleton have our first matches already a week from tonight with at Quad at Muskego with Burlington and Hamilton. Also believe Kimberly and Marquette play each other that night.

We (Horlick) should be a good team this year, we have a nice core of club players. Matt Barrientez, our setter, should be one of the top players in the state. I believe we also have one of the better hitter/setter combos in the state this year between Matt and Mike Tempesta—who has improved tremendously after playing his first club season. It stinks that our tournament schedule is so poor this year, because a lot of the top teams in the state will not play us....the best tournament we are in is Tosa East and some of our players will be taking the ACT on that date.

I am pretty familiar with the SE WI teams, not that familiar with the Valley teams. My guess is that as long as Landon Krause is mostly healthy everyone will be chasing Kimberly. Personally I think if he is mostly healthy we will see a rematch of last year with a different result, but it will go 5. If anyone has good info on other teams up north I would appreciate a little preview of what teams could compete and who to watch.

Spellman is a great hitter and Boland can set him well but do they have enough of a core around them to contend? I believe they have a decent libero/OH in JJ Webber (I think that’s his name?) who I know played Sting or MVC but beyond them I don’t know who would make them in the top 4 or 5.

I also know a little bit about Kettle Moraine; they lose their lefty opposite and both starting middles which will probably hurt them a good bit, but they return their starting libero, both outsides and setter. Backup was a sophomore last year who played Sting over the club season as did their sophomore outside. Most others played club at Lake Country so it wouldn’t be surprising to me if like last year they have a slow start and come alive at the end of the season.

Thanks for posting the Kettle Moraine schedule. If Wissports is right, it looks like some pretty big matches/quads this week:
Tuesday, August 27: Kimberly at Marquette; Muskego Quad with Middleton, Hamilton and Burlington
Wednesday, August 28: Germantown at Marquette; Tosa West at Tosa East
Thursday, August 29: Kimberly Quad with Kaukauna, Indian Trail and Kenosha Tremper; Waukesha West at Kettle Moraine; CMH at Muskego; Waukesha South at Arrowhead
Pretty big early season non-conference and conference matches.

I tend not to disagree, but if Horlick is a top team (per Coach Eric), the Boland-Spellman combination is a bigger force than the Barrientez-Tempesta combo, so they should be in the conversation. West does have a slew of other kids who played club for MVC/Sting as well (I think at least one, maybe two middles). Who else would you slot in the top five, besides Kettle Moraine? I'd say Waukesha West has a leg up over them as well, again based on the Malak-Morton combination you mentioned.

Regarding Waukesha West, please know that their Libero, Webb (sp?) is said to have an offer from Lewis as a bro. With solid passing and solid setting and a terminator like Spellman, all they need around those three is a team that does not commit errors, and they will go far. Add a freshman who played Bro for them in summer league and you may have one of the best passing teams in boys volleyball. And if West is not committing serving errors, they will win most if not all the serve / receive battles. Don't know if they crack the top 5, but I like them in the top 10 for sure. Looking forward to them hitting the court.
