She had one nice slide with authority. Other than that one play I don't specifically remember. She may have gotten in on some blocks.

Wohlert doesn’t hit the ball super hard. She had that one slide that was great, but her approach on the right looks wonky. Decent blocking, which you’d hope for someone her height.
Barnes looked great. We’re going to be a very tough defensive team because Grace didn’t look like she’s lost anything on defense and Molly was stable to the point of me having trouble recalling any spectacular plays or spectacular misses.
Ashburn has a very tough serve. Of greater concern for me is that she looks like she is very capable of running our offense if we use her situationally or there is an injury.
Shanahan was getting some really awesome block touches and one of the last plays was her stuffing Dana.
We ran a few pipe attacks, but not to the point where they appeared to be a part of any system were trying to put together.
Hilley set a few one balls to Shanahan and Hart when at the three meter line, so if that can translate, it’ll be nice to make opposing middles still have to worry about that out of system.
I thought we looked good. I’m concerned like last year about what we do out of system, but it’s hard to divine that from an intrasquad when the opposing team is super familiar with hitter tendencies and go-to shots. Let’s get this season going!

Let’s get this season going! The only thing I can add to this is: - Barnes can set! I believe she had a back-set for a kill in Set 2 - she's going to give Clark a run for her money.
- Haggerty looked strong...and she and Barnes looked like they need to work on communication.
- There was a lot of strong serving today.
- Wohlert can't hit out of system.
- ME Dodge apparently can hit out of system...she had a kill in the 4th set.
- It's fun to see Kelli Bates again!

So I did a little internet sleuthing to figure out what Kelli Bates was up to. I didn't figure it out. Then I thought, let's see what Haleigh Nelson is up to! If any of you saw the "hair dryer" that Hart was using on her shoulder, it appears to be made by Hyperice, where Nelson now works.
Not clear whether any of the other technology we saw in a couple of tweets from a few days ago are also made by this company.

The coaches did a pretty good job of balancing the teams; the final score was 2-2 after the 4 sets they planned to play. The lineups were pretty much as posted on twitter, except with the colors reversed. No particular player movement between sets from team white to team red, unlike some previous years. We saw everyone on the court except Liz Gregorski, Courtney Gorum, and I think Sarah Dodd. With ringers Bates, Agu, and and McMahon involved, that was still 19 people with floor time.
It wasn't just the players getting court time, they brought in two entire teams of referees, who switched out between sets, and I think they used 4 different up refs in the 4 sets.
Substitutions weren't necessarily keeping to NCAA rules, which isn't surprising for a scrimmage; I think I saw Whitehead playing two different backrow positions in successive rotations once. At 5'3 with a slight build, she may be the smallest player who has ever suited up for WI.
We also got to see M.E. rotate to front row a couple of times; that may be plan B if we injure a primary OH. We appear to have plenty of bench depth at all the other positions.
Liberos were unsurprisingly Barnes and Clark, and they stuck with that throughout. I have no idea who gets the starting nod next week; they both made some good plays.
With mystery guest alumna Kelli Bates back as a six-rotation outside, we had two #4's today, fortunately on opposite teams.
Team Red ran a 5-1 with Sydney setting, no surprise there. Team white varied; sometimes they ran a 5-1 with Izzy front row and Mallory back row, sometimes a 6-2 with both setters on the floor, and most of set 4 with Izzy all around. One of the team white rotations had the front row averaging 6'6" or so; it had McMahon (3 rotation OH), Rettke, and Wohlert as a giant team white wall.
Loberg had one impressive 4-1 serving run which included 3 aces and one out-of-system shanked pass against team red, including one ace off Kelly Bates. I'm sure Red was breathing a sigh of relief when Grace finally served long. On the opposite side Hilley also had some long service runs, though with fewer aces.
Izzy wasn't afraid to set Rettke in the middle, but team Red had scouted that and stuffed her a couple of times. When Dana wasn't getting stuffed or dug - both of which happened more than once - she was putting the ball to the floor with a gratifyingly wide range of shots to different parts of the court, short or long, left or right, line or angle.
Molly played 6 rotations and was looking pretty good both passing and hitting. Hart, Duello, and Loberg also all looked up to last year's form too.
For this early in the season, the Badgers overall looked quite decent. We fans can definitely have hopes! If the Badgers keep up the service aces and blocks against real opponents that they showed today against each other, they will be pretty scary.
Don't believe the purported live stats; although they have the set scores more or less right, they only rostered one player per team and sometimes credited plays to the wrong team.

I think that's Barnes' way to the position. Having a libero that can set properly would definitely improve the look of the OOS offense a bit, if not the effectiveness. It feels like having Haggerty and Loberg take 2nd ball duties (rather than just the libero) results in confusion on the floor and also suboptimal attacking opportunities. Plus, they both really telegraph their sets - they don't seem that confident in the task and it always feels like to me they are trying desperately not to have a BHE.

Clark bump sets just fine, and she had some very good ones today, but Barnes was setting with confidence...and the back set told me she seems to want that role when it is needed.

Clark's sets have gotten better. But they have often been "shy" -- they end up being too far off the net and cause the hitter to really adjust their approach in non-optimal ways. We'll see if that improves this year.

Why was the poll set to expire so early? It’s locked now with only 1 vote!
