Adrian and Guto both go down in the first game. I think this is the weakest 4 star field Ive ever seen. Other than the Dutch not a single top tier team in it, great chance for the Crabb brothers to pile up points. An early loss would have been a disaster

Not the weakest 4 Star field for the women.
Most frustrating match of the day - watching Day/Flint punk Brazil in the first game, only to have Emily have one of her mental breakdowns to throw away sets 2 and 3. I simply cannot believe, at this level, that she could have Fernanda so incredibly frustrated and then miss 4 serves in a frigging row in set 2 to let her off the hook and get back into rhythm. Her passing was awful as well - Betsi was constantly moving backwards to set. I realize that it was a night match and the lighting on the outer courts was not the best I've ever seen, but everyone else seemed to handle it just fine. Again, at this level, how do you just keep missing crappy little float serves over and over? I'd get it if you are bombing jumpers, but Betsi deserved to win that match.
Speaking of frustrating, please explain to me how Jupiter/Chamereau could lose set 1, change over to Alex blocking near the end of set to win going away, and then revert back to Chamereau's ineffective blocking to lose set 3. Do they really not process what is happening because of the pressure or the lack of a coach, or are they just too stubborn to make a change? I have been watching Jupiter since USC indoors, and always wondered if the lack of a comparable French partner was holding her back, but after watching both of her matches today, I have sadly concluded that she is just not that good.
Most fun matches of the day - watching Japan beat up on much bigger opponents. I know as a defender I tend to root for the Lindquist sister types, but they are not afraid to get up and try to bang some balls when needed as well - if you are a defense-minded person at all, you gotta love the electricity and passion that they always show on the court. And they are two of the nicest young ladies out here.
It is so humid here, but it seems like there were cloud respites just when they were needed the most. You'd think there would be a breeze being right off the Bay, but not much wind at all. Here is something else that seemed weird to us - walking up and down the main boulevard, where all of the little shops, clothing stores, bakeries, ice cream places, etc. are concentrated, we could not find a single place to buy some fresh fruit. I guess I wrongly figured that street vendors selling mangoes and bananas would be all over the place?
Having said all that, we are starting to like it here. The people are very friendly and helpful, and even though there almost no English-speaking natives around (compared to a much bigger tourist place like Cancun), it is cool how folks still find a way to communicate.

The people are very friendly and helpful, and even though there almost no English-speaking natives around (compared to a much bigger tourist place like Cancun), it is cool how folks still find a way to communicate. Not the weakest ever, the way it may be for the men, but very weak and maybe the weakest in several years. Top 4 teams all missing + Antonelli/Salgado (who were a top 10 in the world). Ludwig and the Swiss (both of whom won 4 or 5 stars this year) are top 10 teams or close to it as well. Czechs also out, Chantal. Really only one team in the field who is a legit contender for gold in Tokyo (Aussies) and they are coming off injuries. If Betsi could just get a partner who is 10% better she could make some real noise. Fun all around game, nice and aggressive, never seems intimidated, but Emily just cant get there. I love the way Alex and Aline play. They are uber aggressive, which you dont see enough of in the women's game and that they switched indicates at least they are finally being a little more flexible. Of the two, I think Aline may have more long term potential, although I agree that Alex is better now. That said, they very often play some pretty dumb volleyball rather than making small adjustments, although they also sometimes seem incapable of switching styles even a little.

2T wins pool. Tay and Jake lost against Grimalts. No one else really matters That lose for Slick/Allen is a make some new partnership calls level loss. The 31 seed that wouldnt even be in if it werent in Mexico? 2T have a great draw. Should make the semis at least and in their half of the draw only the Dutch are a clear favorite over them

Cribb guaranteed a first medal on the FIVB tour!
T2 have a harder route to the finals.

T2 looked badly outclassed against the Dutch. I’m not sure they had a dig the entire match, and Trevor was getting blocked and dug repeatedly.
Hopefully Jake and Taylor can do better in the final. Jake was working the crowd with a long speech in Spanish after they won, so they may have the crowd behind them.
Also, I’m thinking Phil and Nick really should have played this tournament. Easy points left on the table.

Easy points left on the table. Dutch are a much better team than T2. I think both US teams did well here. Both took advantage and won some games that were sort of coin flips in terms of how good the teams are or even upsets (Cribb over Poland). Id love to see Jake Gibb get one more. (Hard to remember he is two years older than Kerri Walsh when he plays this well)

Yeah both (relevant) US teams took advantage of the weak field. And it would definitely be cool to see Jake win. I don’t know that they match up great against the Dutch, but I predict Taylor will at least touch a couple of balls defensively, unlike T2.
