a .v.: ignore this poster. he is a troll and recently just posts nonsense in boys club threads. probably a 20-something year old coach or former club player that thinks the caricatures of club parents and players he makes up are funny. Excuse me? I am a volleyball dad in my late 40s with an uneventful life and an unloving wife, and my son, who was recently measured at 5'7 & 1/8, is getting looks from colleges like Tiajuana Tech and Devry University.

I did notice that about the 14s qualifiers. That is a good thing to help developing teams learn and gain confidence. Although, except for a few teams the overall top D1 group in 14s I think may not be as strong/deep as past few years. Don't get me wrong at this age that is totally fine as not yet playing on mens net. Only basing on that it seemed only a few top clubs have had consistent 12/13s past couple years. Yeah, the 14s teams last year were way more stacked. Especially bay to bay and SCVC. Can't wait to see SCVC's opposite on the higher net this year, a 6'5 absolute beast shouldn't have a problem bouncing on some 16s teams. From what I've gathered, both of those teams lost zero starters to 16s due to the exception year, so will definitely be strong contenders in 15s this year. Can't say the same for most of the other top teams from 14s last year - heard Balboa's 15 Blue squad who was dominant most tourneys last year looked gutted at the qualifier day 1. Guess that's the cost of stockpiling 8th grade exception year kids. Speaking of exception year kids, is that the same as "gap year" kids? Just trying to clarify terms...

Flowcharts have been posted for 18's and 14's (16's have been up for a while).
For 18's: Q2 Gold is "4 Pools of 4, 12 Pools of 3 w/ Cross Matches," and Q3 Gold is 8 Pools of 4 (1sts and 2nds).
For 14's: It's the standard 1st and 2nd to Gold for Q2, and then top 8 to Div. 1A, next 8 to Div. 1B, with no indicator of playoffs for Q2 (it's only two days).
Completeness:
For 16s: 1st, 2nd, and "top 10 3rds" stay in gold for Q2, with 12 pool of 4. The 1st's stay in Gold Div. 1 for Q3, with 3 Pools of 4, and 1sts and 2nds go to separate 6 team brackets for the top 12.

The 14's draw was posted this afternoon. No playoffs for Q2, as I suspected - the only cross matches are for the pools of 3.
The more I look at what SCVA has done with 14's this year, the happier I am.
This format (and USA divs) should separate the competitive teams from learners with a bit more speed, and hopefully let both groups have a great experience - sure, games on D4 are bad v-ball, but those kids have a lot of fun, and that's the point. I'll happily own up to the fact my kid was on D4 as a 13 - it was a great experience.

Haha, well obviously the spirit of the exception year rule is being tested when a club's strategy is to make players always play their grade until high school (it should always be done on a case-by-case basis). The tack-on strategy for the following season then has to be to flip players from other clubs for 15s to fill the inevitable gaps created by those who jump to 16s, which in many cases will be that team's strongest players. Sounds like Balboa wasn't so successful at the flipping this time around, can't win 'em all...

I go back and forth on the 8th grade exception. For a newbie player, I'm fine with it - even for some of the long natural athletes, let them learn the game / skills on the low net. For a boy in his third (or fourth) year of playing? Nope. It kills 15's, distorts 14's, and sets them back (a bit) for HS.

Especially in the age of repeating 8th grade at a new middle, private or home school and showing up to high school a year later & older. This is out of control with the big 3 sports (baseball/bball/fball)... but does happen a little in this world too. Not sure anything can do about it but is definitely staddling the lines... Amen to that, if this is the only questionable "age-gaming" that can take place than it's MILES ahead of the bigger club sports. At least it's out in the open, has good intentions, is well contained/limited from abuse, and everybody plays by the same rules and can approach it however they choose to. We were involved in club hoops for years and the holdback/double-holdback nonsense going on is absolutely shameful. It's always the elephant in the room, there's this whole *wink*/*nudge* BS going on when you play in an age division at every level above 10u. But if you don't do it, then you're bringing a knife to a gun fight especially in the big tourneys where 14 year olds are playing 12u and smashing teams by 50 (we had the pleasure of being on both ends of this scenario, didn't like either one). There were some tournaments where my son would be asked to, and would play for two different teams ON THE SAME DAY. Some of the stuff I saw was straight up embarrassing to watch, often times for the "winners". Shady, corrupt, mercenary youth sports at its worst, with awful parents - needless to say, I don't miss it for one second.

lucky for volleyball there aren't many if any adults/parents that had there dreams unfulfilled by being cut from the HS team and looking to make up for it through their kids and/or doing their imitation of Tark the Shark or Pete Rose. No shortage in the other sports.

If you hold your kid back so he can get another year of HS eligibility in VB: something's wrong with you. We almost held my other son back, to repeat 8th grade - so, I'm totally fine with a hold back if the reasons don't relate to sports (age, maturity, grades, change in school where the kid's unprepared for their curricula, etc.) In our case, it made sense due to age (he's a happy, well adjusted college frosh at 17 now), but we couldn't do it to him.

I feel like some of that is up to the boy. If playing college football is your child's dream and it seems like an extra year of 8th grade would benefit him developmentally and it is what HE wants to do - then I think it is okay. Especially if he is somewhat young for his grade. Back when my oldest son was playing football we knew of several boys on his pop warner team who did this and in the end they are still happy well adjusted young men. (some of them went on to be successful college players some did not).

That's ultimately why we didn't hold my eldest back - he was utterly and totally against it, so *I* backed down on the grounds it was his life. I haven't seen it enough to know if the 8th grade repeaters are because of the kids desire, as opposed to the parents, so I'm still a bit leery, generally. That said, "red shirting Kindergarten" is very common in my area, so while my kid graduated at 17, more than a few of his classmates were 19. If you add that context, then holding back may provide an added support, even if sports driven. I'm sticking to my guns on 14s, though.

For those interested, SCVA has posted the pools for Q2 and Q3, for both 16's and 18's.
In 16's, the draw is interesting, as it changed the flow between Q1 and Q2. Instead of 48 teams in Gold (1s, 2s, and top 10 3rd place teams), in 12 pools of 4, it's now only the top 2 place teams from Q1 (38 teams), in two pools of 4 and six pools of 5. They also changed progression into Gold D1/D2 from 1st and 2nds (separately, into distinct 1A and 1B pools) to a combo pool of 1st and 2nds.
I think it's a neutral change overall for the Q1 1/2 finishers.
If "my" team finished 3rd in pool in Q1, though, I'd probably be apoplectic. There are now typically two "tough" teams (or, expected to be tough, I guess) in each pool, though a couple have 3, but the change to the progression into D1A/D1B evens that out, over all.
It's still utterly bush to change the flowchart in the middle of the tournament, and demonstrates that SCVA has some severe issues this year.
(In some fairness, I'm convinced, with no evidence, that the original flow was designed to fix a problem from last year - a three way tie in a pool of 5 kind of screwed over OCVC-15's in last years qualifiers; there were no 3rd place ties, this year.)
ETA: 5 of the 8 Gold pools have two teams from the same club.
The most interesting pool to a neutral may be Pool 2: BB 16-1s, SB Coast 15s and 16s, and SCVC 16-1s. I expect BB to take 1st, but any of the other three could take 2nd.
Second most interesting pool is probably Gold Pool 8: 4 15's team and a 16-2's. (BB, SCVC, Coast and Wave 15-1s, Wave 16-2s). I expect SCVC to take it, based upon what I've heard about BB losing players due to the exception year, but... should be fun to follow.
