I am just curious on this. every year I go to tryouts at different clubs and who they put on teams usually doesn't make any sense. I always have a fun team to play on but like this year I went to a club and tried out and I was easily the best DS but wasn't invited. I half expected it because it has been this way every year, but I am wondering if the club already knows who they want on a team why do they waste my time and my mom and dads money for me to tryout?
Does this happen everywhere? Its very weird.

Yes. The club world is insanely political. Unless you are a stud, they will put you wherever they want

I don't know about everywhere, but a lot of them. It's somewhat human nature that coaches (and club managers) get attached to kids. If it's close, a lot of times they'll go with the one who has been with the club, or has a positive attitude or something.
Just throwing it out there--but if you keep not making any clubs despite being one of the better players, it's possible you have a bad reputation. (Or your parents have a negative reputation)

Not weird at all. Unfortunately this is the ugly side of club. One year, I accompanied a family to USAV tryouts for Nationals selection and the player was supremely more talented than others in the SW / Lonestar region by far was only selected to Oklahoma (2nd team I believe). The player selected ahead of her was not close in terms of speed, agility, passing, hustle, other skills, and team chemistry. I also noticed that certain club coach (he was part of the USAV selection group) selected several of his girls to participate in the top USAV group but the girls are not even the best in the region or district of their HS. There has to be better oversight in some of these local and National level tryouts.
My advice, develop a skill no one else has or come close to having. Couple of years later, their club coach is losing players and have a bad reputation among the community. It eventually catches up to them. Keep working hard.

When I was growing up, my siblings and I played a lot of different sports in clubs. We didn’t notice any political shenanigans. We just showed up and played. But this was in the 1970s-1980s when things were pure and innocent.
In the 1990s-2000s, when my kids got into various sports, we took them around to different clubs. Never noticed anything unseemly. Over time though, my kids lost interest in sports and stuck to academics, which was a relief as the wife and I could finally relax from all the driving around that we did.

It's called LIFE. Actually what you are experiencing is a good education about how people behave in groups, and where true power and influence lies. I always regretted I did not take more Sociology classes in college, because those insights can help immensely in navigating your way through Club, college, your peers and managers in business, extended family dynamics, etc.
One thing you should keep in mind is that if you look around the poker table and you can't figure out who the patsy is... it is you. Every situation you enter, you need to figure out what role each person in the group plays, and the heirarchy within the group (just like Gorillas at the zoo). When you want a job, you don't simply put in your resume. You learn who makes the decision, and figure out some way to influence that person from within... anybody you know within the organization.
So what you see in Club is just what happens in every facet of life. Sociology.

There are politics in every group of people. The smaller the group, and the less important it is, the more vicious the politics.

There are politics in every group of people. The smaller the group, and the less important it is, the more vicious the politics. This is true but if your talent is supreme and you are a good person / team mate then you will eventually catch the right person's eye. Don't be just good but be a game changer. If you are a hitter, be power hitter - power through blocks and hit with IQ. No blocks are impenetrable. Certain ways around different scenarios so practice each one; a counter move for every move. If you are a DS, make sure you bring back row attack and settings skills into your game. Be very good at these other skill set. The more skills you bring, the better. Setter, timing / ball height / hang, speed on court, ability to dump in the gap, push ability to opponents corner, etc.

A few things... 1) yes... Club VB and politics are practically synonyms 2) perhaps your perception of your skill set is not what a coaches will be... If you're THAT much better then it may not be your skill set that is excluding you. 3) if you're always on a good team... And the club you're at is serving you well... Perhaps loyalty to that group will serve you better than wasting your parents money on those who don't see your value.

There are no politics on VT. Tell that to sorehead trainermch who is threatening to erase Florida threads unless everybody plays nice. What he said!

Yep. In my experience the club knew who was making what team before tryouts even started. And most of the players had an idea beforehand. And money helps...sad, but true.
