My hometown had three HSs, so you take the top 4 players in each age group from each of the three HSs. Maybe a private schoolgirl or two, if they earn a spot.

If there's a hard choice and someone needs to hear bad news, think about the effort involved in telling a stranger (you) or a friend (the kid who has played there for years). As long as everyone got along last year, the checks clear and you're not some undiscovered Olympian then assume things will not change.

I am just curious on this. every year I go to tryouts at different clubs and who they put on teams usually doesn't make any sense. I always have a fun team to play on but like this year I went to a club and tried out and I was easily the best DS but wasn't invited. I half expected it because it has been this way every year, but I am wondering if the club already knows who they want on a team why do they waste my time and my mom and dads money for me to tryout? Does this happen everywhere? Its very weird. Get to know some club people personally, you need the connection. If you have the talent you say you have, eventually a club will take you on, of course it helps a lot if you have some connection with them. As for why clubs bother with tryouts, well to keep up the appearance of being impartial. It's like...jay walking. People do it all the time and few are prosecuted relative to the number of people committing the crime. But it's still technically illegal. So why keep it illegal if everyone is doing it? Well, for the authority to keep up the appearance that they actually care about it. |

This kinda always used to bother me with my siblings teams parents. Parents complaining about playing time and stuff. These coaches want to win they are picking and playing the best kids possible.

I'm happy for you if this is the way it has played out for you. This is pretty much how I experienced local Little League teams...with a few outrageous exceptions involving a coach's child. But there are definitely huge political influences in club volleyball...at some clubs more than others. |

High school volleyball is far worse with politics than club ever was, in our experiences and those close to us. That is, unfortunately, what happens when you reside in a talent rich area. Coaching at that level gets credit for the hard earned monies that parents shell out for good club ball. Certain parents have a knack for the political game long before the majority of the parents. I love seeing kids out with coach in the off season taking photos with their supposedly impartial high school coach at professional sporting events in the city. Always makes those of us that don't suck up feel particularly grand when we see little Jules out with Coach at a Cubs game Posted on the kids Snap Chat story.
I think many places probably are not as fortunate as Illinois is with the amount of talent available at the high school level. It's a shame that couldn't be more spread out nationally but it's just how the market is.

Volleyball is a very small world...especially locally. In my area you would be tagged as a "club shopper". Trying out at multiple clubs every year isn't ideal because it sends a message that you aren't committed to your team. Chemistry on the court is huge and constant changes as a team grows are distracting. You have to be a stud to be able to force them to make changes.
Do worry about it so much. If you are as good as you say you are, coaches will find you. No matter what club you play for.

One of the half dozen smaller colleges in my neck of the woods isn't ever any good at all, but they always have the "best looking" teams in their conference by a country mile.
Do coaches that have trouble recruiting "talent" simply make up for it by signing up a bunch of hotties?

Politics is very common. During 13s and 14s my daughter was at a club that would sub her out of backrow to give the younger sister of another top player on the team a role. If the girl had talent, no problem. But poor soul was in over her head. Turns out, the arrangement was package deal or the family walked. My daughter ended up leaving that club for a "lesser" club where she was able to develop her backrow game. For the first time in like 5 yrs, the 15s of the so-called lesser club qualified open. The club she left didn't that year.
Fast forward 4 yrs, my kid is playing Power 5 volleyball at a top academic school and living her dream. Got all freshman honors and all conference honors too.
The takeaway: if a situation isn't working for you, don't be afraid to take a risk and go elsewhere where you can grow. These "top" clubs only have as much power as we allow them to have.

You might want to consider trying out for a lower level team that would be happier to have your talent. This will give you a lot more playing time and the chance to prove yourself.
