Can someone explain how Iolani didn't make the State Tournament? Did Le Jardin take the third ILH spot because they need to send one from Quad 2? Why was the Kam-Iolani matchup on October 8th the game that decided the final spot?

Why was the Kam-Iolani matchup on October 8th the game that decided the final spot? Iolani didn't make it because they came in third in Quad 1. Yes the Kamehameha/Iolani game was the state clinching match. Winner clinches the final state spot and the losers season was over. Le Jardin made the state tournament because they came out as the top team in Quad 2.

Totally sucks for Iolani. That’s too bad because that was an epic match. Now Kamehameha has the inside track to win another state title. Would’ve loved to see another Kamehameha-Iolani final. The quality of their last match was played at such a high level.

Without her that match wouldn't even have been close.

That match was high level because Oglivie was in it ... yes! I would have loved to see her beat Kamehameha single handedly but her 41 kills was not good enough. If only she had help! You would have hoped someone could have emerged when she was missing from the team due to her stint with a junior national team program. To show what a good quality match that was, I believe Kamehameha ending up sweeping Le Jardin and Punahou? (Teams that already secured their bids?) to finish off that ILH tournament.

Compared to the other leagues, OIA and neighbor island, the level of play is a notch above and that shows every year as ILH teams almost always win the states. The same could be said for Kamehameha also. Without Alana or Kahahawai, Iolani could have also won. I know Oglivie is the best player in the state and one of the best in Hawai’i history, but it still takes 6 players on the court to win a match. I just wish she had stayed home for college. Too bad there won’t be a rematch in the state tournament.

Iolani got no other production/offense from anyone else on the floor while Kamehameha got offense from pretty much every attacker on the floor. Akana, Kahahawai, and Robins all had double figure kills, while also having a decent offensive output from both middles. Kamehameha does not solely rely on one player to win all games. They have a balanced offense and any of their top hitters can lead them on any given night. Iolani had no other offensive threat or point scorers other than Oglivie. Oglivie was Iolani. You take Oglivie off Iolani and I don't think they would even have been battling for a spot at states or the ILH title.

Can someone explain how Iolani didn't make the State Tournament? Did Le Jardin take the third ILH spot because they need to send one from Quad 2? Why was the Kam-Iolani matchup on October 8th the game that decided the final spot? elikapu.wordpress.com/oiailh-history/The real reason. If you talk to volleyball coaches and depending on whom you speak to, the OIA resents the ILH domination when it comes to athletics. The article above provides the foundation of both the OIA and ILH. Way back when the state was just a territory, ILH included both public and private schools. When the rural schools formed, they wanted into the ILH but ILH said nope. Even then, there was a big difference from where you lived on the island. The city schools, be it public or private, were for affluent families. Which today, is still in play but only for the private schools. Once Hawai'i became a state, public schools had to leave the ILH because its funding came from tax money. This is the reason the OIA has the ILH by the hair, they say if there will be a true state championship, then the OIA and the outer islands has to have representation that equals the number of school participants. The difference being that outer island schools conferences are a combination of both private and public schools (due to the lack of competition). In defense of the ILH, they remain THE DOMINANT conference in athletics for the state of Hawai'i. OIA will breakthrough every now and then, but really the ILH rules. Like football, the ILH dominates volleyball, both girls and boys. The ILH had to take the OIA's deal or they wouldn't be able to participate. My hope is that the ILH will convince the outer island private schools to combine with them to have their own championship. Why? to take a stand and demand more entries into the state championships. This season they will have three entries into the girls' tourney, but they had to create a stupid tier one tier two for D1 and that the entries have to come from both tiers, based on school size, I think. In truth, Le Jardin is a D2 school playing D1 because they were one of the dominant D2 schools along with Hawaii Baptist. It is a shell game. the HHSAA will allow ILH three entries, but not from the top D1 schools. Ensuring that one of the three major schools will not make the tourney every year unless the rules get modified.

Akana or Kahahawai does not win the matches single handedly for Kamehameha while Elena does for Iolani. Yeah Kamehameha won't be as good, but they will still be a top team, whereas Iolani wouldn't. And no it's not the same as Hawai'i. Jolie was not single handedly winning matches herself. She had help. Yes she makes a difference, but not the sole reason the Wahine were winning.

Regarding Elena, I think it is true for most of the top ILH schools. When its studs leave, they have to rebuild or become irrelevant. A few years back it was Kamehameha vs. Punahou, both with firepower and D1 skills to spare. Iolani was the third wheel looking in. Maybe it's just the ebb and flow balances itself out between the three schools. Unless a recruit comes in, Iolani will be back in as the third wheel school next year. Both Punahou and Kamehameha just keep reloading.

My point exactly. Hawai’i is a balanced team as is Kamehameha. You take out one exceptional player and that messes with the chemistry and play. Until the last couple of matches, they’ve been having a difficult time dispatching lesser competition, like Irvine. I totally agree that without Oglivie, Iolani would have been highly overmatched, but they still took the more balanced team to 5 with a (wo)man team, suffering a reverse sweep. IMO, without Akana or Kahahawai, Iolani would’ve swept or win in 4. We’ll never know.
