I just witnessed (approx. 15 minutes ago) an object fall from the sky here in the Silicon Valley. At first, I thought it was a meteor but it also had smoke trails. And then it disappeared. I've seen meteors before but they're usually high up and no visible smoke trails (because of the distance). This one was really close. It almost looked like a falling satellite.
Update: It's the Orionid meteor shower.

Meteors can indeed leave smoke trails.

I've seen this already. And as I already said, I've never seen smoke trails on meteors because of the distance, not that they do NOT leave smoke trails at all.

The wife and I (and our dog) got out our cot and lay under the stars to see if we could spot any more meteors. We saw one more but it was very faint and far far away. Nothing as dramatic as the one earlier in the evening, which looked like it landed in an adjacent town.

Be alert for signs that your neighbors have been replaced by pod people.

All my neighbors have Teslas (mostly the model S) and they are now using the free power chargers in the school parking lot across the street.

That's definitely a sign.
