So I'm always happy when there are more movies about volleyball coming out. Seems like there is another one coming out. Albeit it is a Chinese biographical film, on a person that China regards as their Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali and Babe Ruth all roll into one, Lang Ping.
As someone who minored in Asian studies back in college, I do have some familarity with Chinese movies, but mostly those in martial arts (wuxia and kungfu). Some of them are really good and worth-watching. Sport movies in China though I have no idea. This Lang Ping bio film could turn out to be pretty decent...or it could be nothing more than nationalistic self-aggrandizing propaganda. I have no idea at this point which direction this movie will take. The actress playing Lang Ping is Gong Li, she is well-known in China, but not as familiar to those in the West. She has starred in a few Hollywood movies like Miami Vice, Memoirs of a Geisha and the upcoming Disney live-action remake of Mulan. The director is Peter Chan, a Hong Kong director who is know for his comedies and drama films. But what do you think of the trailers (anyone knowing enough Chinese to translate will help a lot here):

Who’s playing Lang Ping during her playing years?
With Gong Li headlining this movie I think it will focus more on her career as a coach.

Probably a younger actress who resembles both Gong Li and Lang Ping. Or they can do CGI like that latest Will Smith movie and make Gong Li look younger for her playing days. Although it's going to look weird if they don't do it right. As for focusing on her playing or coaching career, I don't know, the trailers do feature significant chunks of the 1981 World Cup, so her playing days would be significant in the movie somehow. Btw, even though we don't see much of it, what do you think of the volleyball scenes? I know some sport movies are notorious for featuring really terrible actual game scenes, but what about this one?

Translation of narration. Certainly not great, but it's the best I can do for being several years out of practice It's sad to be confronted with how much Chinese I've lost. When your judgment becomes subconscious, (when) you're on the court can (you) appear in the right place(?) How does the subconscious come? Training is not general training (not "just/basic" training?) but millions of repetitions. I recruited you at 18 years old into the national team. Everything that trained you so hard is all for today. Let's play. (Title Card: Chinese Womens Volleyball)

If they're going to recreate certain scenes, I hope they sub in some actual athletes. That's what they did for The Miracle Season (which did take some dramatic liberties, but kept the original HBO documentary's skeleton for the most part). Although I did see Zhu Ting at :35 (caption said Rio 2016 Games), so maybe some shots from the games will be creatively factored in to limit the need for athlete stand-ins/CGI.

You raised a good point. I did see Zhu Ting in the trailer. From the looks of it, it might not be an editing trick, it looks like she is actually on the film set. I have heard rumors that Zhu and her teammates will play themselves in the movie. If true, that would certainly provide pretty authentic volleyball scenes.

Clearly, Meryl Streep will play Lang Ping, both younger playing days and older coaching days. Streep can do anything.

Using CGI to make Gong Li younger for Lang Ping’s playing years ala “The Irishman” will be costly I think, although they may be banking on this movie making a lot of money in China. Is that the final trailer? if it is then it doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence, hopefully I’m wrong.

Meryl Streep can play Gong Li playing Lang Ping. That's how good Streep is.
Remember Victor Victoria? Julie Andrews (or her character) played a woman playing a man playing a woman. Hilarity ensues.

Idk if movie trailers really matter to the Chinese market the way American consumers care for them.
