If you want to look at a proposed model for the pro tour, classic history of our game and more, Mike Dodd’s December 2 interview on Sandcast is riveting. He gives a Econ 101, Marketing 101 and some Psych 202 in as a bonus.
All I have to say about his ideas and suggestions is they made more compelling arguments on ideas for our domestic tour than anything else I’ve heard on the airwaves or Court 1 at Hermosa, LOL.
On his comment on sponsors, if the AVP did affect Miller Lite sales as he mentioned, the only reason advertisers aren’t beating a path to our better mousetrap might be the old advertising adage: Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is, I don't know which half!
Best show I’ve heard on beach in a long time! AND, he’s a SF Giant fan! What’s not to like?

Can't wait, always enjoy his perspective in interviews, commentary etc. Generally enjoy the old school guys but one thing about Mike, in contrast to Hov, Sinjin, even Randy a little, is that Mike is never concerned with putting himself over the way those other guys sometimes can be,

This episode was really good, I hope they bring him back again during season for a follow up or it would be fun to do a Sandcast Round Table on the state of domestic volleyball with some other influencers of the game with p1440 people also. Do you think he has been projecting these opinions to the brass at AVP and p1440 while falling on deaf ears to say this out loud on the podcast, or was he just sharing his thoughts casually?

Good point. The way he "chose his words" often, made me think he was making compelling points to the audience and EVERYONE knows how "1-degree of separation" this sport is, so there is no worry this info won't get back up to Donald Sun. I'm sure he's aware of some, but this podcast made a cogent argument for some stuff that would have to be looked at seriously.

Agreed, that this was a terrific episode. Mike's comments on Kent Steffes were fascinating. While he didn't come right out and blame Kent for the collapse of the AVP in the late 1990s, it certainly sounded to me like that's what he was implying.
Also, the conversation near the end about the domestic tour and the Olympic qualifying system / trials was excellent. What was a bit surprising to me is that Tri was mostly agreeing with Mike in that USAV really needs to change something so that the Olympic system doesn't take all the top players away from the domestic tour. I'd really like to see Tri qualify and do well that the Olympics, and then use his stature to advocate more strongly for changes within USAV. There were some really good ideas in this discussion.

Yes, he was tepid on Steffes. It's a tough call, WAS Steffes responsible for a sport that he bought into and was making good money, or was the AVP itself responsible. But, maybe the AVP WAS the players and so he "should have". I'm mixed on this as I don't know the configuration of the AVP at the time, but clearly many players DID show up in Milwaukee at the dive bar as he said. Funny, weird incident FOR ME, as a non-pro-beach follower AT THE TIME, I went down to our Sportmart (before Sports Authority) and was walking out and saw this guy giving out posters. I almost did it as a favor for HIM as I didn't know any players or anything and LITERALLY felt sorry for the chap standing in the aisle with no one around or anyone interested. It was SINJIN SMITH. In his heyday. Am "I'm doing him a favor"? LOL . . . Oh I had it a bit wrong on that one, but a scene I'll never forget. I still have the poster somewhere, when it went from something to throw on a wall in the garage to something I won't get rid of!...

That isnt the only reason for sure, but if you want to know why the modern tour isnt close to as successful as the old one, think of Sinjin in that Sportmart, then listen to 75% of the modern players complaining about having to travel the world for free

Most of them arent even good at that, although Kelly Claes is a fun follow

Speaking of podcasts with old school players, Lee LeGrande was on Starting Point with Casey Jennings last week. Lots of good stories from the 1990s AVP but it also reminded me that today’s players just aren’t as colorful.
