Surprised this didn't get it's own thread. It was discussed in the match thread and one other, but I assume many people didn't see it. During the first round UCSB at UT match, with UCSB up 2 sets to 1, former UT player Khat Bell somehow was invited from the stands to 'address' the team. LHN Twitter account memorialized it with this tweet.  Is this a rules violation? Was it an extra unfair nudge for a home team with an already large home-court advantage? And if it's not a rules violation, or is not going to have any impact on UT, does this mean that, going forward, all teams can do something similar? |

Did the coaching staff have her join the bench during the match, before she addressed the team? I know a volleytalk guru will post the rule.

I don't know if it's true that Bell was "invited." Based on her own account, it sounds like she went of her own accord. My guess is that it is a rules violation (I imagine there's a blanket rule against fans going on the court during the match), though I have yet to see anyone produce the actual rule that was violated. And until I see the actual rule, I will withhold judgment as to whether it was actually a violation or not. With all that said, I thought it was awesome, and I would like every team to have a designated former player (can change from match to match) for this purpose. |

There is no rule about that in the NCAA rules/interps... It would be a host institutions call on keeping spectators and SAs separated...

There is no rule about that in the NCAA rules/interps... It would be a host institutions call on keeping spectators and SAs separated... Agree. There is zero rules violations. How would this be a rule violation yet teams of all sports can have guest faculty or staff coaches on the bench? They have had the children who are sick on bench. Also not sure what rule is supposedly being violated. |

There is a 25-person "bench limit" for the tournament, including the allowed 15 players and up to two other players who are not suited up. I don't know if Texas was up against that limit without counting Bell.
Also, there is an overall limit of three coaches and one volunteer coach. Texas already has three coaches and one volunteer coach, so it's quite possible that Bell could be counted as an over-the-limit volunteer coach. A countable coach is anyone who "Provides technical or tactical instruction related to the sport to a student-athlete at any time".

For postseason, it would be covered under the tournament hosting guidelines that the NCAA gives the institutions. The hosts can't entirely do their own thing. There are guidelines about what the PA announcer can say, relative to host vs. other teams, when/how fight songs are performed/played. I would expect who can be in the bench area for each team would be covered. There are roster size, etc. restrictions. |

Is she not playing in the Philippines no longer? What constitutes her being washed up? Team went on to win so no sure how the team was harmed more than helped if what she said was so bad and terrible. Lastly, what is unprofessional about a passionate alumni speaking to the players? What arrogance is shown here, isn’t she a 2-3x all American? I have heard of this happening in football, what is so wrong with her doing it here? They didn’t lose.... |

I won't speak for the NCAA rules because I don't know the exact rules, but at the high school and club levels there are rules referencing who can sit on the bench. If you're not listed on the roster or you don't have certain coaching certifications you are not allowed on the bench. |
