Speak for yourself. bwf2 you were one of the biggest parts of the Tuaniga hype train. You basically declared her the best setter in the Big West even before she played one collegiate match. So I am happy to point out all that hype of what Tuaniga will do for Long Beach State you help generated didn't pan out. Hahahahahahaha Well, Keller is certainly buying. She got a scholarship, as a transfer to USC without even playing match in the Big West. He's also already got Lazaro + a talented setter coming in, so, Tuaniga is probably pretty special for him to bite on that. That's a good buy.

I am not a Long Beach fan. I am a Big West fan. I want to see the conference get stronger, not weaker. Losing Tuaniga to the Pac, Marjama to Bama, Hellvig to pro, Dvoracek to a knee injury, half the UCSB roster to transfers... It is all bad for the conference and bad for UCI. Your shortsighted "trash talk" doesn't change that. Wow UCSB lost half their roster to transfers?
For the record I feel the same way as you do about hating top players leaving the conference for whatever reason. But I can multi task. I can poke fun at the Long Beach St. fans whose expectations have blown up to the size of a blimp because of the out of control Tuaniga hype while at the same time not being happy about another top player departing. I don't doubt bwf2's assessment of Tuaniga's skills. It's probably spot on. My problem has always been let Tuaniga get some wins under her belt first before slapping on the praise extra thick. Praise someone for their accomplishments and not their potential.
I remember when Logan Tom came to Stanford and people were saying she's great and really has no weakness, blah, blah, blah. And, of course, I was saying, let's not get out over our skies because we need to see what she can do first. Boy was I wrong.

I watched UCD vs UCI. Am I the only one? I have waited for comments from their fans. Nothing. I thought the best player on the court was UCD's #3. I looked her up on UCD's website and she is only a freshman. Finally got to watching the scrimmage, and I agree #3 Olivia Utterback was impressive, by far UC Davis' most consistent player. Just a recap for those who didn't watch, UC Davis came with 10 players only. Based on their preview written beforehand, sounds like the only returning senior is Mahalia White, who was a redshirt junior, but... she unfortunately tore her ACL at the beginning of the spring so not sure if she will be even able to play at all in the fall. Jane Sesler was not there along with Demari Webb, Sesler was with the beach team for the season so probably just resting a few weeks. All four freshmen made an impact in the match with Utterback playing the best. She is a steady six rotation lefty opposite who they threw in on the left one set and she was able to pass as well. She has a great line shot and can put some heat on the ball, struggles on the left as expected for any lefty. Megan Lenn and Amara Aimufua each played on the outside and were both subbed out in the back row. Aimufua is athletic and can pack some heat but was inconsistent. Lenn was similar, does not hit as hard. With Sesler not there, Casi Newman ran a 5-1 and was not bad. She struggled the first two sets with her location to the outside, either off the net or a little tight. But I applaud her ability to set the middle, a good amount of sets in the middle, slide, and to the back to Utterback. Josie Ough was fun to watch, she seems to have picked up more speed, moving around more. The block slowed down her attacks a lot but she kept going. Libero was Shira Lahav and the DS were Rachel Churilla along with Perri Starkey who also hit as well. Honestly, defense was not very good, probably UC Davis' biggest weakness. For UCI, it was fun watching Onye Ofoegbu. She had a lot of time across the net from Ough so it was a fun battle to watch those two. Ofoegbu was the most athletic one in the gym of course, hits well and blocks well too. Another person that looked great was Sophie Wood playing right side in the 6-2. She didn't get set a ton but she put away most of them on her slide attack with tips and swings. She got stuck on the left and couldn't put the ball away but she may be a positive on the right and it was nice having her set the second ball. Four newcomers got the start for the Anteaters, Marianna Bertolone at outside, Amanda Albertini at middle, transfer Carly Moreno at outside, and Caitlin Kikta at setter. Other starters was Joy Umeh at opposite and Kelly Negron setting in the 6-2 and Cassie Stewart coming in at outside in the later sets. Umeh is athletic, has hops, can crush the ball, but not consistent. Surprised they got the ball to her a lot early. Both setters got the ball to Ofoegbu a lot which will be a big part of their offense next season. Overall as mentioned, Davis' defense is a true weakness for them. Both teams passing was not great, but Davis was able to keep the ball in play, rather than Irvine who was very hit or miss with a lot of shanking. That would be their biggest weakness. Both teams will have to rely on freshmen/newcomers on the pin taking the out of system swings, not much experience there.

I heard a very depressing bit of information from a UCSD recruit today.
UCSD beat CSUF 3-0 last Saturday.

I heard a very depressing bit of information from a UCSD recruit today. UCSD beat CSUF 3-0 last Saturday. With so many players not being available I would not take anything from this result. The Big West next year will be the Wild West with so many new players on so many rosters.

I'm less confident about how competitive BW schools will be in OOC matches.

I haven't see her play, so can anyone tell me wether or not Macall Peed is going to take the libero spot for Santa Barbara, or if she'll at least stabilize the team's passing? I know passing is probably a huge question mark for UCSB after the departure of Ruddins, Fleck, and Glasker.

Both teams will have to rely on freshmen/newcomers on the pin taking the out of system swings, not much experience there. This is a pretty good assessment as I also watched the match. It was nice to see Ofoegbu hitting the ball now instead of her tips and missed connections from 2019. It sounded like it was the first spring match for the Davis freshmen who looked pretty good for being so young. It was hard to get a good gauge because Conners was changing the Davis lineup every set whereas Irvine kept their starting lineup basically the same the entire match with a few subs in the middle of sets. It is a bummer to hear that Mahalia White is out for this upcoming season. That poor kid has been through so much and she is so fun to watch! The 6-2 definitely helps Irvine with their small setters and I think this young Davis team can do some things if they settle in quickly. Plus I heard Davis just got the transfer middle Tindsley from Utah? If true having 6'6" and 6'4" middles may help their defense by just blocking more balls haha. I believe UC Davis goes down to Cal Poly on Friday and UCSB on Saturday. Hopefully they will stream the matches! *fingers crossed*

How did the UCSB v. Cal Poly scrimmage end up? Must be pretty weird seeing CAL POLY alum Adlee Van Winden an assistant coach for UCSB.
