I don't get it. Why not have AM play middle back for the middles and have JS and JL play LB? Seems to me that would be a terrific defense.
Then you still have Pavan hitting backrow and playing RB OR coming out for a situational 6-2.
The biggest problem with this is that it means a lot of talented players don't play much. JS as libero would help with that, but I'm not sure it makes for a better team.

1. McCormick played behind one of the biggest blocks in the country ... You're assuming that you know where McCormick was supposed to be playing on defense. My problem is that I don't think Cook ever wanted McCormick to be libero, at least that's the way he acted. He could have nurtured and developed her, but he didn't. She's not the perfect libero, but how many are? One? Two? He better hope that either Jen, an All-American outside hitter, will suddenly be agreeable to playing only backrow, or that Schwartz can do the job. If not, he may find himself wondering why he didn't value McCormick more when she was in Lincoln.

You're assuming that you know where McCormick was supposed to be playing on defense. I do know that you don't play behind the block against a cross court hit if you play 5 or 1 (Volleyball 101).

Did Jen and Houghtelling (or whoever) play middle back?

Nebraska had their outsides playing middle back defense and Amanda playing leftside. This could be for many reasons which only Cook knows. It could be due to quickness it could because the outsides were often set backrow attacks out of the middle. I opt for the first reason. I agree with ALL of VBKing's observations of McCormick.

Did Jen and Houghtelling (or whoever) play middle back? The outsides played middle back so that they could come down the pipe out of the back row and perhaps because they were quicker than McCormick

From what I saw Gentil may have started out in left back but she pretty much played wherever the ball was!!!

Seilhamer played left back. So that Florian and Burdine could hit the pipe.

The Huskers will wind up better without McCormick in the mix. With the acquisition of Larsen, they need a place to put her on the floor. Since she and Houghtelling are more physical players than Jen S. (who has outstanding ball control and defense) it makes sense that they bang balls on the outside and have Jen S. take control of the defense and passing.
Amanda was certainly not the reason they tanked last season, i'd give that blame to a mediocre setter if anyone.
L1= Larsen (BOMBS THE SERVE) L2= Houghtelling (SOLID AND PHYSICAL) M1= Elmer (TOP 3 MIDDLE) M2= Stalls (YOUNG BUT SOLID) Opp= Pavan (BEST OPP. IN COUNTRY) S= Busboom (ONLY VULNERABILITY) L= Saleamua (WILL HOLD DOWN THE DEFENSE)
Roster-wise... this is hands down the best team in the country for '05... if Nebraska plays well, there is NO team in the country that can compete with these 7 players...
Larsen will be FOY PAVAN will be POY and Cook will not be COY...
