Regardless of who returns to what position, Hawaii needs to focus on their passing. I remember stating their passing looked suspect from the first match against Ball State, but you know, it's the first match.
There were matches in which Voss would have 3-6 attempts in set one, then have the same amount by mid set three.
There were some passes that UCLA made that looked effortless and I cussed at my TV (lol).

UCLA played amazing. No shame in losing to them. But i think UCLA returns all their starters next year and have a deep bench.

It might be better to have cubicle make the thread. All good! I'll put together a Warriors links post at some point ... I'll just roll with it like last year. I like seeing the early/immediate enthusiasm for next year! I'm still processing the loss ... so very proud of all this team accomplished ... but dammit, I want hawaii to get that 3rd straight title! Gonna take a VT break for a bit just to decompress. In the meantime ... Happy posting everybody! You like me DM you my roster matrix so you can put em at the bottom of the links? A visual graph helps i think

Obviously UCLA will be the favorite with every one they got returning. But, where do you see Hawaii ranked to start the year? Honestly a bunch of teams lose a bunch with the exception being UCI, UCLA, LBSU and maybe a couple more. If Shewie gets moved to setter or we bring in a real talented transfer like Byu did with Hughes....I think we can be in the 4-8 range ranking wise. Just because we have our pins and passers all returning and our middles will be a big strength for us. And for the record, I highly doubt Charlie will move any of our passing pins to Oppo. He will give Alakai Todd a shot to prove his worth out there. Guarantee. He will give Buchanan a shot out there to prove his worth too I'd suspect. These boys have waited patiently for two years behind some talented peeps. Ain't no way Charlie wouldn't at least give them a shot. Agreed, I think Austin and Alakai definitely get their chances, it’s going to completely be up to what each does in the off season to be better, more consistent athletes and not dwindle under the program expectations. I think Hakas has taken some monster swings on the right. More impressive than Dimi’s at times, but I just don’t see Wade wanting to mix up his starting outside OH pair, especially when both are great passers

Just checked Sheward’s height and he’s 6’2”. Not short at all but could be a blocking liability? Irvine’s setter is 6’0” Yes, and Irvine went with a two setters with the Aussie dude and Sani at OPP 6'10" D'Arcy will be a huge piece for them the next 2-3 years

Hawai'i needed that 1st set against UCLA. Losing the first set in the red zone they lost a lot of momentum. They fought like hell to get back into the match in the 2nd set, but after that expenditure of energy they were making mistakes that I attribute to fatigue, and the constant serving pressure and defensive effort of UCLA.
The farther from home you are, the more careful you have to be about conserving energy, managing momentum, and staying focused. Penn St. drained them a bit, then whatever Hawai'i did the next day to recover (or not) played a bigger part in the UCLA match. Losing that 1st set put Hawai'i in an energy deficit with UCLA. They needed 3 out of the next 4, and they needed some help from UCLA, which wasn't coming in the 2nd set. After the 2nd set marathon, Hawai'i looked spent.
Basically, it was a reverse of the situation Hawai'i had put UCLA into when they played them at the Outrigger. In the Outrigger Hawai'i put the monkey on UCLA's back by winning the 1st set. Then UCLA fought like hell to get back in the 2nd set. But after that UCLA fatigue and mistakes set in for them, and Hawai'i kept the pressure on with their serving.
So, in 2023, UCLA and Hawai'i were basically a coin flip. Whichever team could take the 1st set had the edge over the rest of the match.

Was looking like Kniffen was trying to figure out a way to get him onto the court any way he could. Maybe he pulls a Torwie and goes middle full time?

UCI puts anyone in the middle. Setter, middles, libero's lol.
JK. They will be awesome next season tho.
Kinda worried about Long Beach... they did not have a bench the last two seasons (probably with the projection that Nikolov would account for so much scholarship money for 2-3 more years), but they also lose Holdaway, Olivier, and there's rumors Briggs is leaving.
Looks like they've put together a great freshmen class tho, so they might be a year or two away again.
This is what a I love about men's volleyball, most programs, coaches and teams are easy to root for and are class acts. Minus Stanford lol =P

You are exactly correct, our passing needs major improvements, we got aced 12 times and out of system countless more. Middles were awesome when we were in system. All starts with the pass……We’ll be ready next year.
