With the seasonal resurrection of transfer portal discussion/speculation, we should probably try to take scholarship inventory to see if we even have any available. Otherwise, we're talking about something that isn't even on the minds of the coaching staff.
Based on the timing of commitment announcements and other educated guesses, here's my tally (obviously I could be wrong 'cause I've got no connections). If anyone has a different count, I'd be interested in hearing it:
1. Raina 2. Barnes 3. Burbage 4. Mosher 5. Bingham 6. Bohm 7. Dean 8. Barry 9. Philpot 10. Smith 11. Martinez-Mundo 12. Reilly
If that's correct, there aren't any open scholarships and prospective incoming transfers.
For what it's worth, I'd be fine with our current projected roster as is, going into the 2024 season. Get the freshmen playing time right out the gate. Raina, Taylor, and Laynie at the pins. Burbage and Bingham have MB/OPP flexibility and can fill in over at OPP if needed. Bohm, Burbage, Bingham, Dean, Philpot all MB by trade from their prep days can duke it out in the practice gym for the two MB spots. Raina 6-ro. Three DS/L. Brooke 5-1 with possible 6-2 at times with Brooke staying in to hit front row and Raegen setting those three rotations. I like it.
Taylor de Boer missing and you've got 3-4 full scholarships committed to DS/Liberos/likely non-full scholarship players in Barry, Martinez Mundo, Reilly, and maybe Barnes.
Thanks for the response, flipley! Your inclusion of our one season graduate student transfers among the likely non-full scholarship players- I'm wondering what you're thinking about those two. Since 2024 is their last year of eligibility, I'm wondering how that math would work. I was just assuming since they're eligible for one last season that they would each be awarded one year of scholarship. Do you see it differently from that?

I think there are other resources for grad students and, while Martinez Mundo and Reilly are filling areas of need, I'd be surprised if they were on full athletic scholarship. Barry (and Barnes) may have other scholarship resources too based on their Illinois resident status and scholarship prior to enrollment. Using full rides for all 4 of them would bring any coach's roster management skills into question.

There are no partial scholarships for D1 volleyball in the sense a scholarship cannot be divided between players. Either they are on athletic scholarship or not, and only 12 individuals can be on an athletic scholarship each year. That does not mean they are not on some other form of financial aid. Pell grants, NIL, and so on. There is other money available for graduate students. So long as it would be available to them even if they are not volleyball players they can use the money, eliminating the need for them to get an athletic scholarship.

EDIT: I had missed Taylor on my first count.
I doubt Reilly & Martinez-Mundo are on scholie. Probably financial aid. Especially 1 yr players. Barry prob 2 of 4 years? We need some experience at OH to help Raina. I hope Phillipot comes in and has a monster year at MB. i think her and Bohm will take the 2 spots. I agree with what INPAIGN said. When Kayla is on at OPP, she’s a force. I said it all last year, she needs play with a stank attitude and crush the ball. Also, she tends to run under the set a lot. This is the last year that we have Raina so lets not waste it. Get a transfer OH to shore up the pins.

I am fairly confident Reilly is not on scholarship, as others have suggested.

Ok - portal opens in 48 hours! Asking the portal Gods for a passing OH to help shore up the pins.

So Transfer portal Tea thread -- seems like the May portal is going to be active. I guess players saw the writing on the wall with Spring practice and recruiting classes.

As we anxiously wait to hear of anyone transferring to Illinois, does anyone think we might lose someone to the portal?

Imoto-Eakin is in the portal now The addition of Reilly put her 3rd/4th on the S depth chart. Probably best suited for a smaller mid-major. Best of luck to Maya in her future endeavors.
