Hard to say exactly, but I don't think it's purely a male thing. There are both male and female coaches who behave inappopriately and treat players badly, and of course to varying degrees. What is true is that there are almost always signs of it that way too many people ignore. Is it a common occurrence for coach's to date their players? Attitudes have changed—considerably I would say—on that subject. It was not that uncommon in the past, especially prior to the past decade or so. There are a few examples of well known and even highly regarded coaches who have dated and/or married players on teams they coached. Today, I think it is almost universally viewed as problematic for a variety of reasons, but the realization that the power imbalance is too difficult to ignore or overcome even if there is consent is a big part of the reason for the shift in attitude.

This line was from his bio while at Coastal Carolina. Notice he says “compete” not coach, and it’s actually not even true. A very Chris Gonzales thing to do tho. Gonzalez is the only American-born coach to compete in every CEV competition, including CEV Champions League, CEV Cup and Challenge Cup. goccusports.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/coaches/chris-gonzalez/535I am trying to get a sense of the man. How tall is he? Some men who are of a certain stature must always be showing that they are double tough, double smart, double succcesful. This issue would trigger men of a certain stature to be intimidated by their players when it concerns a height differential. All of the above. He’s not tall, 5’ 6”-ish, very thin, balding since birth.

I was curious, and suspicious, about the hiring of the Texas law firm, but the article points out that the interim director at Idaho is also a member of the firm that was hired. That’s simply insane from the standpoint of trying to even appear credible or objective.

As a short coach you either make your peace with looking up at your girls all the time or you limit yourself to coaching 12s. And even there you find some have already sprung up to eye level lol.

On Jackie Wernz, the interim director of the Office of Civil Rights and Investigations: Wernz appears to have dual roles. In addition to being listed as the interim director of the Office of Civil Rights and Investigations, she’s listed as a staff attorney for Texas-based Thompson & Horton, LLP.
The Idaho website uses the same photograph for Wernz as the law firm’s website. An effort to reach Wernz late Wednesday was unsuccessful.
Thompson & Horton, based in Houston, is the law firm hired by the University of Idaho to conduct what has been described to the players as an “objective” third-party review of the volleyball team’s climate and culture.
That law firm is also the same one that defended the Baylor University, which settled a civil suit in 2023 filed by 15 survivors of sexual assault who alleged that Baylor “permitted a campus rife with sexual assault” for years.OH HELL NO, that’s not sketch at all! Idaho, what are you doing?

Anyone know if the first practice happened? Did the athletes report? I can’t even imagine the tension in the room if practice did take place.
