I feel like I’m the only one who watched Sabrina Ionescu in college.

She died tragically in her prime, I think she would have gone on to even greater achievements had it not been her premature death from heart condition.

in terms of once in a generation player - mireya luis. Luis would be one of the greatest to have ever played volleyball. She had an incredible jump height despite not being so tall. Still, she never played US college, so not sure if she is so comparable to Clark's record...hmmm.

She died tragically in her prime, I think she would have gone on to even greater achievements had it not been her premature death from heart condition. She was a world wide star who helped bring the USA women to the forefront of international Volleyball. USA rose to the #1 world ranking leading up to Moscow Olympics, but the boycott occurred. She won Silver in the LA Olympics in 84. Then the US Coach and USAV got into conflict, and he left. Hyman followed him to Japan, where she died unexpectedly. Who knows what would have happened if Selinger stayed, or if she lived longer, but it took a long time for the National Team to finally come back.

Had Moscow not been boycotted (which means Soviet should not have invaded Afghanistan)...US might have well been Olympic champions already and we would not have to wait 41 years for that to finally occur in Tokyo.

I’m surprised no one has said Fields. she put USC on her back the last 2 seasons. unless you mean an over hyped yt woman who doesn’t have a ring 🦡 I'd honestly take Fields last over the past 5 USC go-to players: Bricio, Jupiter, Kaczor, and Lanier..
Of the last 5 USC greats / go-to-players: I'd take Bricio, Jupiter, Kaczor, and Lanier all before I took Fields. (edited for Clarity)

The others you could debate, but Fields was very one-dimensional, the others contributed more all-around (ball control, serve, etc.) Fields was really the only weak server of the bunch. If all I need is an offensive point scorer and nothing more, then the dynamic changes. Caitlin Clark's scoring aside, she's also just a great teammate, which is what makes her so special and fun to watch too. Bricio was special. I think the closest talent relevant to the discussion we're having because of her serving + her offense + her ball control was great that final senior year.

Yes, I had Bricio in mind when I responded. Fields was a singular talent, both literally and in practical effect, but I would take Bricio without consideration of the ensemble around her, while I don’t think I would ever say that about Fields. *I see the word “last” now—that definitely changes the meaning, and I simply missed it. **”I’d take Fields last… isn’t badly worded imo

"I'd honestly take Fields last over the past 5 USC go-to players: Bricio, Jupiter, Kaczor, and Lanier.." You definitely worded it kinda weird, but I get your point now, particularly when it comes to Sam.

Bricio's serve is a legitimate highlight of the early/mid 2010s NCAA volleyball.
