I totally forgot they're limiting double calls this season.

I mean, it was supposed to be Landfair. Instead she's on the bench at Nebraska. It's tough to go after someone else when you think Landfair is all locked up, and then she isn't. Is a team with Sarah Franklin, Anna Smrek, Devyn Robinson, and Connor Booth really whining about not having enough capable attackers? Connor? It's Carter.

This may be controversial but I think Anna Smrek is extremely one dimensional as a player. Against most teams she’s hard to defend because she’s so tall and swings well BUT if the ball is not put in the perfect spot against a good team… she struggles badly She’s not the type of X factor player that I’d want in WCVB right now because there are so many more players that agile, athletic, and quick across the net. Again this isn’t an attack on her but I think given what I’ve seen from her over her career, I think she’s easily exposed in matchups On the other hand, it is not right now, but, you know, her as an X factor player led to the pinnacle of my lifetime of sports fandom in 2021, so there is that.

Outside of something like what happened to Nijaree Canady in softball, where Texas Tech grossly over paid her with a $1 million deal, Nebraska is going to win every portal battle if compensation is a factor. Nebraska really chopped Wisconsin at the knees with this one. No question about it. Which was why I was confused when Nebraska fans were so upset with the Landfair pickup. Even if she rides the pine, Nebraska severely hampered Wisconsin with that pickup.

Even if Landfair plays in like 8 sets all year, having her is a strategic advantage over other teams not having her.
Still, I wouldn't be surprised if she was starting by October.

What are thoughts on the 6-2 choice? Glock vs Cabello? Not exactly what you asked, but I thought Cabello was the best setter on the floor tonight in terms of giving her hitters opportunities to make plays. Toward the end yes, but it took a while for her to settle in. She was overly reliant on the left pins and struggled with placement on the right for sets 1 and 2 from my eye test. Not unexpected from a freshman in a huge first match. She settled in nicely. Once the middles and oppo got going, she started really making much better decisions. That said, I did not think Glock looked bad by any means and her connections with debeer and the middles are more natural looking at this stage. It’ll all come together but I think we will see a 5-1 with only a situational 6-2 by conference play

brooklyn deleye best opposite of the tourney? wha The sad thing is all of the actual opposites were either mediocre, bad, or not set. And this is a group that includes Beason, Smrek, and Maldonado Diaz 🥴

No Wisconsin player made the AVCA First Serve Showcase All-tournament team. 😔 Deciding to name an OH as the best opposite is so shady to the 5 opposites that DID play yesterday too like sheesh 😅

So are we also going to blame TSC on the myriad of poor sets from Charlie to Anna and Dev. She was not good from Sets 2 on forward. She was outplayed by both Louisville setters. If TSC is so poor then put Charlie (which she is very capable) in at OH and bring in Anderson at setter. You guys are being entirely overly critical of TSC. You're wanting grace for TSC for being a freshman but have not extended grace whatsoever to Charlie. Yeah, being a freshman doesn't make her immune to criticism. There are dozens of freshmen every year who come in and play average to great.

There are dozens of freshmen every year who come in and play average to great. TSC was seen as a work in progress coming in - her lack of exposure to the highly competitive youth volleyball scene in America and her late arrival to the sport being drawbacks to her ability to immediately compete. Charlie has neither lack of exposure to American youth volleyball nor a late arrival to the sport. And she was also very highly ranked. Thus, the higher expectations. My guess is she embraces them.

2024 AVCA First Serve all-star team selections
Best opposite: Brooklyn DeLeye, Kentucky Best middle blocker: Rebekah Allick, Nebraska Best setter: Bergen Reilly, Nebraska Best libero: Elena Scott, Louisville Best outside hitter: Charitie Luper, Louisville
AVCA First Serve MVP: Rebekah Allick, Nebraska
Minus the fact that DeLeye isn't an opposite, these feel like the correct choices. DeLeye arguably had the second best pin hitter performance, so I like her addition.
