John Hawks, who never played collegiate volleyball and doesn’t even have a college degree in any discipline, was just appointed Head Coach, to replace John Speraw. What an insult to the legacy built up by legendary coach Al Scates, as well as to the UCLA volleyball community!! Hawks needs to be replaced by someone both competent and that the team will trust, such as Brad Keller, Stein Metzger or current Ass’t Coach, Nick Vogel. If this is the best that UCLA Athletics can come up with, then maybe it’s time to hire a new AD!

You lose all credibility when you claim having played collegiate volleyball being a major factor that would contribute to a coach being good or not.
There are plenty of former players who are poor coaches and some of the most successful coaches of this game on the men’s or women’s side did not play collegiately.
I swear some people really just want to revert back to a life of crying and sh*tting their pants all day.

Which NCAA Division 1 VB coaches that have been successful never played in college? I don’t know of any. I agree that playing in college doesn’t mean that you will be a great coach, but it’s an essential part of the experience that great coaches draw upon.

I was going to say it’s not too late to delete this stupid comment but now it is.
