I think most/all of us Gopher fans have been hoping for more back row offense as the season has progressed. I grabbed these numbers from evollve.net and posted them before the match vs. Northwestern on Wednesday. Back row only hitting % for the season: Crowl: .600 on 5 swings Acevedo: .250 on 8 swings Hanson: .234 on 64 swings Wucherer: .077 on 13 swings Grote: -.025 on 40 swings Here are the numbers now. Crowl: .600 on 5 swings (same) Acevedo: .100 on 10 swings Hanson: .239 on 67 swings Wucherer: .200 on 15 swings Grote: -.025 on 40 swings (same) In total, 137 back row attacks as a team this season out of 2,307 attacks (or 5.9% of total offense). More more more! Both Wucherer and Hanson have been effective there recently. To put that in perspective, we all know Londot is a go-to for the Buckeyes. Her back row attempts alone make up for 9.3% of Ohio State's team offense. 229 back row swings of 2471 total team attacks. 26.3% of her own swings are back row attacks. Hanson has had the most Gopher back row swings and they make up 10.7% of her own attacks. I wish I kew if Grote has a ton of kills but also a ton of errors on her 40 back row swings or just a lot of non-terminal swings. I don't remember. I think it has been mostly in serve receive from middle back. Some transition D balls after serving sprinkled in? Her back row attacking has pulled her overall hitting % down. She would be hitting .262 this season minus her back row attacks. She's at .248 They forgot Thibault .500 on 4 "swings" and Palabiyik .133 on 15 "swings", lol.

Really hope Grote's absence on Wednesday was just for maintenance against a weaker opponent and she is back on Sunday.
The Gophers will need her on, or it may be tough to win.

I did almost include them lol Didn't Grote have two dig-kills against Wisconsin? Take those out and her back row hitting % is even more negative 😅. Wonder if the sets just haven't been in her wheelhouse or if she's been aiming for lines and missing. Maybe the connections with everyone have been streaky in practice and that's why we haven't seen it much in matches.

I think Grote had some back row kills last year. But yeah, need to get more efficiency on those attacks across the board.

How has Ohio ST fallen to such a level in league play?
Feels like a trap match, somehow Minnesota wins.

Don't quote me (you can and actually I welcome it for any correction) but I thought they started the year without Sellman playing, who's now come on to some positive impact? Regardless London can take over a match any time *insert ghosts of the 2022 sweet sixteen matchup*

Sellman missed the preseason. i've mistakenly been typing Emme when it's Emmi I was surprised to see that she is taller than Rader. btw you typoed London for Londot
In case Grote remains out on Sunday: Did anyone notice on the NW service run in set 2 when MN was in ro1 NW 6 - MN 4 MN did a switcheroo stack putting Hanson in serve receive behind Crowl & Phoebe on the left edge Crowl loped across the attack line and behind Shaffmaster on the serve, so was not in a hitting pattern for a FBSO Wookie started in serve receive in the middle with Hanson on her left & Z her right. She could have pipe attack potential for a FBSO with the right kind of pass. Wookie's passing seemed noticeably sharp on Wednesday. What a difference from pre-season.
That gets our lefty on the right...where she belongs and Hanson in her natural position. This is the first time I've seen the play this year and it makes so much sense. They didn't get a FBSO but they did get a Hanson kill on the left. Crowl is less effective swinging on the left because the ball has to come across her body to her swing. Also the two pins have vastly more blocking reps in their natural positions.
But they went back to OPP on the left and Hanson on the right the rest of the match

Either Londot and/or Radar have had much success against us in the past. Hopefully, it will be different this time around.

Shaffmaster is 5-2 against her "COVID peers" Rader and Londot. We never played B1G FOY Londot in Spring 2021 because the two matches were cancelled. Both Buckeye wins were in 2022. They have swept us once at the Pav ('22) and we swept them once at the Pav ('23). Every other match has been 4 sets.
This one will be 5, won't it?
(Say it won't be!)

The BTN announcers mentioned that MN is scoring on about 47% of their serves This is second in the B1G just a few tenths less than NEB pavsec5row10 keeps track of this
1. If Grote is unable to play in the front court maybe she could serve for Crowl (under 30%). She is one of the servers over 50% 2. Shaff's serves vs NW were great and her efficiency was 63% 10 6 16 A couple more matches like that and she will be back over 50% 3. Z has been less effective in the conference matches. I would have her serve deeper and shallower risking more SEs in favor of more OOS receptions 4. I would have Hanson's contact point 3' behind the end line. She needs more margin of error for her pace and trajectory. Her efficiency has slipped since the end of the non-conference schedule.
If Mia Tuman is getting great passes we'll have a tussle so an increase in service pressure will make life a LOT easier By the same token we will prevail if our passing allows Shaff to activate our MBs. Will Hanson get the better of Londot in the blocking segment of the game?

Gopher fans may be being a bit more nervous about this than necessary, but that is the nature of Minnesotans.
Serve tough, close out sets and don't pass like 8th graders (all easier said than done) and this shouldn't go more than 4.
Sellman had a very good match against Penn State, but let's not forget that she hit negative against USC, UCLA and Purdue and is hitting .120 for the year. The big Gopher block should be problematic for a freshman if they're relatively out of system.
(if Grote isn't back this all becomes tougher)
