Did you know…?
Michigan State has two medical schools. Students can study allopathic medicine and get an MD at the College of Human Medicine, or they can study osteopathic medicine and earn a DO at the College of Osteopathic Medicine. It's the only university in the Big Ten to offer both degrees, and one of only four in the country to do so. Both of MSU's medical schools were founded in 1964, though the COM was established as a separate entity and did not come under the MSU umbrella until 1971.
In the US, MDs and DOs have the same fundamental scientific training and use the same methods of diagnosis and treatment, including medications and surgery. Educational requirements are similar: Both degrees require four years of medical school, and MDs and DOs train side by side in residency and fellowship programs that last 3-7 years.
The difference between allopathic and osteopathic medicine boils down to philosophy: Allopathic medicine is rooted in providing targeted solutions to treat specific ailments. The primary objective often revolves around directly counteracting diseases and mitigating their effects on the human body. Osteopathic philosophy focuses on a holistic approach to practicing medicine, meaning treating the patient as a whole—not just the symptoms or injuries. Every system, organ, and function is interlinked, and the health of one affects the others. The focus extends beyond just treatment, leaning heavily on preventative care.
As a result of this difference in approach, you tend to see osteopaths in primary care - family and internal medicine, pediatrics, OB/Gyn, and emergency medicine - whereas MDs tend to make up more of the single-system specialties, like cardiology, neurology, and orthopedics. In the US, 60% of osteopaths are primary care physicians, whereas that number is just 35% for allopaths. At MSU, more than two thirds of COM graduates stay in Michigan to practice, living up to the spirit of its heritage as a land-grant university.
