I'd say it's more of a crime that Morrison wasn't a 1st team AA. But McLaughlin certainly has done a hell of a job at Washington, not just this year, but every year since he's been there. To take a perennial cellar dweller in the Pac-10 to the national title in 5 years is truly amazing.

Agreed. As another poster said in another thread, Cook should have gotten an award for recruiting, but not Coach of the Year. It looks like they were overrated all year. Pac 10 rules.

What are you guys talking about?!?! After all the adjustments cook made on the fly during that match, he showed us his brilliance as a coach. I was most impressed by his timeout when UW went up 2-0 in game one. Smart and bold move coach! This match was not lost by coaching.

Yeah! all you need is a 25 year old foreign player with a questionable 5th year of eligibility, So the NCAA gave a favorable conditions . Can he repeat? Probably not!

He was chosen by his peers who probably are slightly more qualified to make that distinction.

It's in their DNA. It makes their opinions probably slightly more accurate than anyone else's. They are given radiation treatments to force mutations in their ability to breakdown the sport of volleyball and rating those that coach it. Secret's out.

Agreed. As another poster said in another thread, Cook should have gotten an award for recruiting, but not Coach of the Year. It looks like they were overrated all year. Pac 10 rules. How can you say overrated. Just look at the teams they defeated this season. They happened to lose to a team that played a great match. Does this mean that every team that Washington beat this year is overrated? Nebraska is a great team that just happened to get hammered on December 17, 2005. Who knows, things may have been different on December 18 or any other time. But on the night that it counted, Washington was superior. They deserved to be number one and Nebraska, based on the rest of their season, is a clear number 2.

First off to Washington, congratulations on a well played match. I am not in a position to decide whether Cook or McLaughlin should have won COY and it is a mute point now. However, it is appropriate as one person noted (sarcastically at that) that not all the blame can go to the players. The coach(es) have to share in the loss of their team (as they would in the victory) for making (or not making) adjustments in the game plan during this very important match.

Jim McLaughlinthis is your real winner!! Easy to say in hindsight. I didn't hear a whole lot of people pushing for him in September when a lot of people were criticizing Washington for their cupcake opening schedule. Or when they were being taken to 5 by Cal (twice) and Arizona in conference play. Or when they lost to UCLA. He would have been a good choice though -- obviously. But you can't discount Cook's team's performance either, at least up until the COY announcement was made and before the final match.

Jim McLaughlinthis is your real winner!! McLaughlin pretty much already had a starting lineup determined before the season started as he had everyone back. Even though NU had everyone back Cook still had to determine what had to be done to get Jordan Larson on the floor and still keep everyone happy with all the talent he had while also having to determine how Maggie Griffin would fit in with the program as well.

And just what adjustments would you be referring to?
You really think calling time out after the first two points was a good thing? He only reinforced his teams nervousness.... and gave washington confidence. IMHO
Why did Cook not take Pavan out of serve receive? Even Heather Cox (the volleytalk whipping girl) couldn't understand why she was still passing after shanking so many passes.
I was so impressed every time I saw or read comments from the Washington players. The way the coach would give them tasks to focus on during matches. After a match, they would very often talk about the intensity and competitiveness of their practices rather than just talking about their performance during the match. I think Jim did a great job of instilling confidence and ownership of performance in his players.

Take a look at Nebraska's serve receive pattern and you have your answer. Remember, the setters come in for the middles.
Also, Pavan _was_ frequently moved from the middle of the serve receive to the side. UW kept serving her. And she had her moments.
Heather has no idea what she's talking about.
