Well congratualtions to the Washington Huskies. I had a feeling this would happen in that we would lose, but certainly suprised we were swept. I think Washington's edge were their setter and five seniors. In volleyball that makes for a great chemistry from getting to spend 3/4 years together developing rythyms with each other.
But now for next season. I kind of thought if we won the NC we might stick with the 6-2. Now I am not so sure.
One thing I know for certain is that Busboom will not be on the bench. The 3 seniors will be Houghteling, Mancuso, and Busboom..all the best of friends by the looks of it. I think JC will not be able to avoid the problem he had this year with his setters and it will only be magnified next year. Do you sit down a 3 year starter? Do you hand over the reins to "All World" Holloway. What happens to Griffin? Is she the odd woman out? Any thoughts?

If Holloway is the starting setter and runs a 5-1 offense, can JC uses one of the other 2 setters as a passing/defense specialist in the backrow, and occasionally using her to set the ball when Holloway has first contact of the ball?
This may not be an appropriate formula to follow but when USC ditched 6-2 system in favor of 5-1 after the 1st match of the year, Haley inserted Dillon as a passer/backrow player for the Opp (Kelli Tennant). The advantages of that were Dillon was a pretty decent passer (and allow the front row OH off the passing duties and more involved in the offense), and she served as the second setter on the floor. But for that to work for Nebraska, that would mean taking (sacrificing) Pavan off the floor for 3 rotations.

We had a libero in the whole time. |

Interesting article looking forward to next year in the Journal Star. Stated the obvious in that we need to find another MB and that Cook (once again) realizes the importance of a libero. Interestingly he stated that Holloway could fill that role. He insists that she will be on the floor in some way. I have reserved that "has to be on the floor" status to Busboom.
On the other hand I can't help but thinking he is using Holloway as an incentive for everyone to practice at their highest level, including current libero Rachel Scwartz. I am not sure I have ever heard Cook praise a current player so much and pretty much let everyone know that she WILL be playing. I mean with Pavan and Larson that was fairly obvious. I still get this feeling that Griffin will be the odd woman out.

Make one of them a DS/Serving specialist and come in to play back court similar to what John Dunning did when BK take over the setting job from KG.

Nebraska will not will a national championship if Dani Busboom continues to set next year. She should/could be the libero, something she can actually do and do well. If Nebraska wants to win championships then we need to go back to the attitude that Nebraska wins titles with all american and all conference setters. Something we have not had since 2002. I've seen more double contacts blown against the Huskers in the last three years than I have in the last 15.

I would bet Gorf's farm Dani will _not_ set next year. And libero -- if they use one -- could indeed be the spot for her.
However, Dani's progress as a setter is to be admired. It was not an easy transition for her and she keeps improving. Unfortunately, Nebraska is too good for a work-in-progress.
Everybody seems to think Holloway will be the setter next year. For me, the question is: will they run a 5-1 or a 6-2? The 6-2 allows them to use more of their bench, keep more people happy.

I agree that Busboom may not be the All American setter we are used to seeing, but I too have to admire her progress. She has taken a lot of flak but we basically did the equivalent of taking a wide receiver and tried to make her a quarterback. I am only speaking from a pyschological standpoint. John Cook cannot sit a 3 year starting senior and Nebraska native on the bench. Libero would be a good spot for her, for sure. |

She's done a great job in terms of learning how to become a setter. A school with Nebraska's tradition can do better than just finding a athlete, training and hoping. From what I've heard and from the little I've seen I think Holloway is that setter. Griffin has the tools, I'm just not sure she has the mental toughness to set for the Huskers. On the 6-2 I don't think given current players that Nebraska has the people to run the 6-2 again. The only outside hitter we have left is Mancuso. Mancuso is a liability on the court. She cannot pass, serves OK, cannot attack effectively and cannot play good defense. Yes she brings a ton of energy to the court. Brooke Bartek is coming in next year as an outside but I don't see anyway she can contribute(if ever.) If Hodges comes to NU then this changes things a lot. On the libero, this person needs to be an impact player in terms of serve receive AND defense. I'm disappointed that Coach Cook hasn't done anything about it after repeatedly saying he knows its a difference maker. Busboom plays great defense---can she pass serve receive? This spring will be very interesting for the Huskers. Are they taking another international trip?? |

She seems much more defensive minded than the others, the question is can she serve receive? |

A good coach will sit her down if that's what's best for the team and I think he is a good coach. If he goes with a 5-1 it is a lot easier to get players on the court as a DS. |

Why get excited about next year already--just dwell on your loss from this year for a while. When it sinks in, take a million deep breaths, count to about one billion, then it will be just about time for next year's interesting posts.

So Griffin transfers to Nebraska for one season? If Holloway is setting a 5-1 which it looks like is going to happen. Doesn't make much sense to think she transferred for one season. She won't be a defensive specialist as her backrow skills are marginal at best. Wonder how Cook will manage all the bench players next year?
