So, the Spanish volleyball league is loading up on Americans this year, at least more than I'm used to seeing.
Logan Tom has signed in Spain, as has Kim Willoughby (Murcia), Nancy Metcalf, Benishe (Dillard) Roberts, Lena Usteyminko (sp?), Sherisa Livingston, Jen Hoffman, Cheryl Weaver.
Very interesting to see how this league performs with the influx of American talent this season.

You have Willoughby going to Murcia? I thought it was Alicante with Livingston and Hoffman. I think there is going to be a big influx of Cuban talent in Voley Murcia. Like 4 or 5 of the NT starters. Tenerife and Groupo 2002 Murcia are the clear front runners for the title. If Voley Murcia brings in the Cubans I think they will, they will be right up there also. Spain is definately a league I wish I could see more of.

Does anyone know the big name europeans that will be playing in Spain?
Looking at that list... it is interesting to see the talent that really hasn't made much of an attempt to try playing for the national team. Willoughby hasn't made an effort. What about Roberts and Livingston? Weaver did briefly. I'm wondering why that didn't workout.

While Kim is featured in those pictures along with Benishe Dillard, the article doesn't mention her signing with the team. And as far as I know, based on a news release on the Caguas website, Willoughby's contract in Puerto Rico runs through the 2007 season, although I'm not sure if they Spanish and Puerto Rican seasons are run simultaneously. Also while I am not too familiar with the league , but reading the news links there are articles that state Nancy Metcalf and Glinka playing with the team as well??
Also according to the burgosvoley.com website, which states its based on rumors and hearsay shows Willoughby listed on Alicante's team with a high probability of signing.

If any of y'all get a chance to visit Spain, do it. A truly magnificent country. I would say the same about some of the South American countries, but I won't because kidnapping is such a big business down there.

As someone who has visited South America, I would say that the image of insecurity is vastly overstated. If you've ever been to Buenos Aires, or Rio de Janeiro, or Santiago you will find that areas are comparable to any metropolitan US city. Of course there are dangerous areas, but I've felt more insecure in areas of New York, Los Angeles, and Miami than I ever have in parts of South America. Don't let media exaggeration deter you from visiting South America, they are some of the most beautiful areas of the Western Hemisphere.

I love meeting the king and queen while in Spain. I love the people there. I love the landscape and the history. It's a very cool place. Also, if you're in the northeast of spain, catalan, try the horchata.

I wonder if she is going to play in the other Mucia team I referenced earlier - with all the Cubans... She's not in the team list on Groupo 2002's web page. Unfortuanately Voley Murcia's web page is not up to date www.voleimurcia.orgAs far as European stars playing in Spain they will be concentrated mostly in Spar Tenerife and Groupo 2002. MarsHmellow linked a spanish transfer page that has most of the rosters. It should be noted that these rosters are more base on what the people doing the web site have heard, as opposed to anything concrete - but it is the best page we have on the subject. Renovada means the player is returning to the team from last season. Alta means the player is transfering in from another team. Interesa means the team is interested in signing that player. Sin datos means the people doing the website have no information on the player. Baja means the player is leaving the team.

Kim specifically told me "grupo 2002."
They have a preseason tournament next week in Valencia that she is going to.

Intersting... It will be very interesting to see how this shakes down after the World Championships end and Kilic, Glinka, and Metcalf return. They paid Glinka (and Metcalf for that matter) too much money to sit her if she's healthy enough to play... I could see Willoughby eventually passing up either Glinka or Metcalf (or both) in terms of being a better player.
Thanks for the info!

And as far as I know, based on a news release on the Caguas website, Willoughby's contract in Puerto Rico runs through the 2007 season, although I'm not sure if they Spanish and Puerto Rican seasons are run simultaneously. Luis Berríos (Caguas) did not know that Willoughby had gone to Spain. Spain's official league matches start on the last week of September (Pre-season matches are ongoing). Puerto Rico's season gets underway in January. However, Spain's season doesn't end til May. Caguas does have Kim under contract for the 2007 season. I'm thinking Grupo 2002 wants a temp player until their stars come back from the World Champs (which is until mid-November). If Grupo 2002 decides they want Willoughby til May, I would think they can work out a transfer. Intersting... It will be very interesting to see how this shakes down after the World Championships end and Kilic, Glinka, and Metcalf return. have you heard if Glinka is going to the World Championships?
